gas mileage?

hi everyone. i think i'm getting poor gas mileage and i'm curious ... what are you guys (and girls) seeing in milieage when you reach a 1/4 tank? on the average, when i get to a 1/4 i'm at 280 miles. i have 113,000 on my max, i always use 93 octane and my car has no mods. also, with 1/4 tank of gas i need to buy 14 gallons to fill up. i'm due for new plugs @ 120,000 miles but maybe i should change them sooner?
thanks,
maury

280 miles with 1/4 tank left sounds right. Depends on your driving habbits as well. City/Highway-and how fast you cruise on the highway. I get worse then that when I drive up to VT from NJ. If you look on a map I think VT is all up hill from NJ Also doing 80 and 90 MPH on Rt.91 sucks up a lot of gas too.

As DMB would state...You should calculate the mpg and not home many miles is left at a curtain part of the gas gauge...

I get about 22 MPG

I calculate it by filling the tank all the way up and then driving till the light comes on. I record how many miles I drove and then I fill up again till the tank is full. I record that and take the amount of miles I drove divided by the amount of gallons it took to fill the tank. I did this a few times to get an average.

20mpg city sounds about right for an automagic. I get that and usually around 27 on the highway. But I have gotten up to 30mpg at times, so...

I don't think that is poor mileage. With all city driving, my gas light comes on at around 280miles, with the needle on E. That's a pathetic 17-18MPG in the city. In mixed highway/city, I get around 20MPG. All highway, around 26-27MPG.

I keep track of mileage records on all my cars. I have all records dating back 3-4 years ago

you don't have to drive till the low fuel lite comes on. it is best to
1)fill your tank
2)reset trip odometer
3)drive till at lease 1/2 to 1/4 tank
4)fill tank & record how many gallons
5)divide how miles to gallons and you will have an average mile per gallon
6)repeat steps 1-5 at least 3 times to get a more accurate average mile per gallon (best to run tank down to about the same level each time for more accuracy)

yeah 99nosmax, that's what i thought it seems useless to me to get a reading when the tank is empty when i never let it go past 1/4 anyway. as long as i keep checking it at 1/4 tank i'll be filling it with 14 gallons anyway. thanks

That sounds like me
I got 23-24 mpg on 60% highway.. although it's not that great, I was happy considering the 13-14 mpg i used to get on my old max. I'm going to wait until after my tune up to get really worried.

yeah..

yeah i agree with supamax and 99nosmax.. that's what i do.. i get about 19mpg. of pretty full throttle the whole time on my 92SE auto. my only mods is a Cattman Y-pipe. I put in a new fuel filter and just a new simple air filter(not performance) I've also put in racing fuel. which help after i did that. It helps clean the engine. But not so significant.

I have my gas mileage records from day 1 with my car. Before I got the JWT ECU, I was averaging 21.4 mpg. Post JWT ECU, I have been averaging 22.0 mpg. My mileage has varied from a high of 31.2 to a low of 17.1 (the 17.1 was the day after I installed the JWT ECU).

?

It's all realtive. I mean if you fill the car up to the gill and then dirve the car till it's almost empty and the fill it up but not top it off, you are cheating yourself. You need to fill it up the same time, every time. If you top it off everytime, then you need to do that when you fill it up the second time. Hopefully this makes sense...

Aat 1/4 tank I am at about 300 miles on my 95SE Auto. I recently drove to Chicago from Cleveland, Ohio and got 25mpg on the way out with 28psi's in the tires and a rain storm the entire way. On the way back I ran 34psi's and it was sunny and I got 30mpg. Each way I was cruising about 74mph.

thanks for the input shumax - that was going to be my next question for everyone... what psi are your tires at? mine are at 29 cause that's what it says on my door jam. when i got the tires put on my new rims (98 gxe steelies) my garage inflated them to 45!!! it felt like i was riding on bricks! now my car is almost always weighed down an extra 200lbs or so, from my music equipment. if my door jam says 29psi should i stay with 29 or should i add some to compemsate for the extra weight? i wanna get 30miles to the gallon in the worst way
thanks
