couple exhaust questions, plz

i am planning to do some kind of turbo or nitrous setup at some point. but on the short term i am going to be doing a full exhaust w/ cat delete, maybe a warpspeed y pipe. i dont really want to spend several hundred dollars on an exhaust now then have to spend several hundred more later.

i know with the Saturns i am used to tuning you couldn't go more then 2.25" without major low end loss but this is a bigger engine. if i go with a 3" exhaust on a stock engine (save an intake), is that gonna cause major low end tourqe loss due to no backpressure/velocity?

and just out of curiosity what is the factory piping size?

the factory i believe is like 2.25 or something slightly bigger.

i wouldn't go 3" if you're NA.
2.5 is probably the biggest you should go NA. you can still run a turbo w/ 2.5 and let's face it...that's not going to happen for some time so roll w/ the 2.5 and go from there.

you also know that removing the cat doesn't really add too much in terms of power right?

yeah i know. factory cats generally suck, and the car is old enough to not have emissions so i don't have any need to spend money on a CarSound or something...

i read in the turbo FAQ that 2.5" exhaust w/ turbo causes a lot of problems...?

you read deezo's post right?
he's talking about a VQ with DOHC. your GXE is rocking a SOHC VG motor which doesn't breathe as well. sure the 3" would be nice with boost but you're not running turbo right now right?

3" exhaust would probably kill the low end...but you're more than welcome to give it a shot...but i don't think it'll be fun to drive.

you can also do those electric cutouts so you can have the 2.5 exhaust and once you go turbo flip the switch and it will dump the gas right out.

My two cents: Unless you have to absolutely replace your exhaust now due to it falling apart/leaking/etc, then you are waisting your time, money, and I feel working backwards in your reported goal to turbo your car. You will NOT need a Y-pipe for a turbo.

If you have to replace your system, forget the Y-pipe. You're going to have plenty to cover financially you've not even yet considered in this modification.
