Like many .org'ers, my suspension is dieing so I have been doing a suspension overhaul as well as my CV boots. I have a 98 Max.

I went to remove the axle nut (wheel bearing lock nut) and realized I don't have any sockets or wrenches that are large enough. The biggest I have is 1 1/4". My Chilton Manual only says "235-314 (24-32, 174-231)" which I believe are the torque values ... but no size for the nut.

So I guess, I need to go pick up a socket ... but I don't know what size to get Please help!

Also, if you can clarify what the numbers above stand for that would be great.

 

Drivers side 36mm and pass side is 32mm IIRC

I have seen 34mm on replacement axles

 

I thought they were both 36mm.

man they both 36mm aint no different size on either side, both exactly the same, oh yeah get yourself a breaker bar and another pipe for leverage if you dont wanna injure your back.

Yeah, why would there be a 36mm and a 32mm?

..... Although, my MR2 does have a 32mm on one side and a 31mm on the other side, but thats because some A-hole that worked on the car before me put an NA size on one side and a Turbo size on the other side. Freakin half assed people.

 

im gonna go check right now. one reason could be that we dont have the same ammount of power going to both wheels though??? just a guess.

There all always 36 both side's, maybe somebody put a 5-g one on your car kevlo? And yeah, I've also seen replacement axle's come with a smaller nut as well, big flanged fawker instead of the stock style.

 

My pass side is 32mm, but I do have replacement axles so....

 

I bought a 36mm socket and it fit both sides...

 

Just did this today! My new revelation is...pneumatic tools rock!!!!! I bought the cheapest Sears impact wrench and it made short work of the 36mm nuts on both axles. Why did I wait so long to get this thing? Rich

 

where can you get a socket of this size????? Not at Sears or Home Depot

I am currently checking with Lowes ... but no one is in that department.

I can order it through Sears.com but I wanted to use it today ... time is wasteing away

I am sure specialty shops would have it but will also charge up to kazooo ...

 

32mm is from 5th gens, which some axles are the same so its fits. My 01 VLSD axle came with a 32mm, but I reused the original 36mm.

 

Sears will have it. If they didn't then it was out of stock, but the stores do carry them.

 

All you needed was that braker bar and a leverage pipe.

 

I bought my 36mm socket at Pep Boys, when I checked they had both for hand tools as well as for pneumatic tools. Gotta love Manny, Moe, and Jack!

 

Actually i just started a transmission swap and was suprised to see that the drivers side axle was 36mm and the passenger side is 32mm.

 

i have never seen a 4th gen with different size axle nuts from one side to the other, personally. and I've owned 4 of them. all are 36mm in my experience.

Replacement axles may come with the 32mm or 36mm nut. You never know what you'll get.

 

OE is 36mm and NOT castleated. This is the castellated 32mm nut that came with my crappy APWI axle. I reused the OE 36mm nut and retainer.

 

100% sure? Cause that means my cv axles aren't stock (they're castled). And, seeing the condition of my car, I'd be surprised if the previous owner replaced anything on it.

Same. I had a mechanic replace my CV axles from stock and he is cool enough with me that he brings out each greasy part and shows me what he's found. My 96 had castled nuts. /shrug

 

Anything other than 36mm is questionable...both sides should have the same size.

 

Replaced both the axles on my 97 last year. They were the original Nissan axles and both nuts were the 36mm non-castle type.

 

36 MM 0n both sides, I´ve just confirmed it when removed both axles to change my clutch.

 

I found out while doing the upper oil pan yesterday that one of mine is a 35mm.

 

Axle nut is 36mm and not castellated. It has a stamped steel retainer that fits over it and interlocks with the cotter pin.

Dependent upon what country you live in, and what kind of torque wrench you have.



If your mechanic is good, he re-used the OE nuts and retainers and placed the crap aftermarket castellated nuts on the old axles.

 

Didn't realize Brian Shaw torqued Nissan's nuts. [/no pun]

 

IT IS NOT A DAMN 32 mm it is smaller like a 30 or 31 mm and I took mine apart but I went and got a 32 mm socket and it’s too big so ty so very much for wrong info that has me in a bind now

 

These cars are old. Who knows what's been replaced. Can't fault anyone on here.

 

Digital Calipers are cheap on Amazon. So cheap, there's no excuse not to have one to remove guess work.

Blame everybody else for your choices. It's going to be a long, and rough road.

Nissan OEM nut size is actually a 32mm nut I just ordered a OEM axle and it came with an OEM 32mm nut. The aftermarket Napa axle I had just replaced the nut was a 36mm. The aftermarket axle nuts can come in any size.
