Are Koni Shocks good for a smooth ride???

I was planning on going with Tokico Blues in my 98 GLE since I heard with the stock springs will give the smoothest ride. However, I just found out that the company I work for has an account with Koni so I can probably get a good discount ...

But, at first look I see Koni Sport Shocks and most people are looking for Koni's for thier racing performance. Do you know if they have good ones that will give a smooth ride? Even if the ride isn't the smoothest it may still be worth it if I can get them for cheaper. Thier site is not currently working.

Which Koni Shocks would be good for me?

Thanks

Yes Koni is arguably the best strut available for the maxima.

Get the Koni Sport Shocks (Inserts). My friend has them on his 2001 AE. He's running them with H&R springs. I road his Max couple times and it's a really good setup.

I want to keep the STOCK springs ... so, would the Koni Sport Shocks be best with these or should I look at the red Koni "Special" shocks?

Yes get the Konis. I have them and I love them. Btw what generation maxima do yo have? If you have 4th gen, koni yellows are the only option (no red konis)

Thanks, for the info ... Yeah, I have a 4th generation Max so ... I guess sport is the way to go.

I just don't want to drop or do anything fancy ... this is my daily driver and I am mostly interested in a smooth ride. I see that they are easily controlled to give a smoother/firmer ride as desired ... so I guess they are everything I would want.

They do look like they will be a little more work than others since they are inserts but I assume the ride is worth the effort ... even if I am just going to use stock springs.

It appears the only inserts are available ... Any clue why the whole setup isn't available? Mine are corroded and stuff so it would be nice to get a completely fresh setup. But, I guess a little clean-up and a coat of paint can get them back into good shape.

OK, for the Koni shocks it would cost about $130 more than the Tokico Blues.

It looks like it is a pretty good deal but its not good enough to make me bite. I don't really need the adjustable feature and although they better than the Tokico Blues ... I am not really looking for the "best".

Am I making a big mistake?

Because you're setup will be for daily driving, get the yellow. I agree with MorpheusZero, get some springs.

If they made bolt in struts prices would be much higher.

Konis have a set compression curve so no matter how you tweek the **** the ride doesnt suffer.

Koni's over tokico for 4th gen. I've had tokico's and they weren't the best at all. I think it also had to do with pairing them with eibach's but still didn't like the overall feel.

Tokico Blues are fine for stock springs.

Koni Yellows are better for any springs (ride, handling, durability). Definitely worth the money and the extra effort in the install.

Don't forget, you'll have your dampers for at least tens of thousands of miles. $130 is a significant price difference now, but it'll be diluted pretty quickly over the time you own the car.

Let me put it this way: I've been told that my car with stock SE springs and konis rode better than my buddy's 4th gen did stock.

I had both blues and Konis. Koni yellows will offer better ride. You won't be disappointed w/ the yellows

This thread got me thinking that Koni inserts might be worth getting. I could buy blown struts for cheap and put in the inserts. That way I can minimize the down time on my car during the install and I can go back to stock if I sell the car and the used Koni setup.

I have a 1998 Maxima, solid shape,

I think I need new shocks (struts), I think all 4, maybe springs also, not sure?
It looks like from this forum Koni Yellows, (I actually) like a performance ride / feel.

A year ago I got new Michelin Pilot Sport PS2 17 /235 (and used but awesome, 2001 Maxima alum wheels) I love these tires, best ever and the rims look great.

The ride is starting to get very bumpy last few months (the pot holes of Los Angeles / Hollywood), shocks are shot it seems to me, original.

thanks in advance fellow Maxima.orgers,

I wish koni's were only $130 more (for third gens) then kyb's or tokico's, its about $200-300 for those, and koni's are $500-600

That said I'm still buying koni's, because they will last longer, ride better, and handle better then anything else available.
