Topping off too soon

Everytime I try to top it out i reach in the 90's where its at about 4000 rpms in third gear and it just doesn't seem to go anymore. If it is not the O2 sensor holding it back then what other possibilities are there?

Why was the other one was locked? There was some good, holesome info contained in that thread?

To the OP: just stop trying to top out your car and get it to run well. WHile IIRC the O2 sensor has no bearing on ECM function @ WOT, it WILL still make your car run badly, so get it replaced. After that, try and run a scan on it, maybe with a scanner w/ data logging so you can see what is happening @ "highway speeds"...

It's because you were wrong. But whatever, think what you want, spread misinformation, nothing off my plate.

it's not just about topping it out i feel the loss of power at all speeds, it feels like it takes a while just to get up to highway speed

If you have a before and after dyno, then you can compare, but you don't so.

it doesn't take a dyno to feel a power loss

I forgot what codes you had? One was an O2 sensor, which doesn't affect WOT driving, and barely affects closed loop driving. They affect driving under 1200RPM mostly.

i have the bad right front O2 sensor code, also the speed sensor and A/T codes but the last two have been on forever even before i started having this problem, i just don't understand why it won't go past 4500 rpms when driving in the 90s and the O/D seems to not even work at that point

So, Cliffs, it wont go over 4500 RPM, and you are @ ~3000 RPMs while @ 60MPH(i.e. no shift to OD/ lock-up action from TC)?

OK, now I know you are full of ****. So that means I need a dyno to tell me if my KS goes out? WOW, mine must be really sensitive, cause' I could really tell when mine was bad.

TriniRicanPapi, it is going to be very difficult to diagnose this problem like this, especially when we have no way of knowing how the car actually runs. You just telling us there is a power-loss isn't going to cut it. If the car has codes, go and fix them, then try and track down this problem.

yea well it seems like it's choked up, i floor it when i hit the highway, and it seems to just accelerate normal even though the rpm's are all the way up, i feel like i'm driving a Civic

Maybe you have a dead KS. Checked for codes recently?

Ok, now we are getting a little more specific. If you go from a standing start and floor it, does it pull hard through all the gears until it gets to where is would normally shift into O/D, or is it slow from a stand-still?

well i have no knock sensor code and i have changed the knock sensor before, if i floor it from a stop it seems ok, the problem seems to only happen from that third to fourth gear, when i'm around 60 mph the O/D works fine, if i turn it off the RPMs jump up (3rd gear) and if i turn it back on the go back down (4th gear), after i reach about 80 to 90 where the rpms are around 4000-4500 it doesn't matter if O/D is on or off the rpm's stay the same

Ok, I would try this: Accelerate normally up to about 75 or so, take the car out of over drive. SO you are in 3rd going 75, turn on O/D. Does it go in?

Turn O/D off, stay going 75. Accelerate past 75 to around 80 and turn O/D on, does it go into 4th?

Do this around these speeds but vary when you turn the OD on, and see if it is always going in. Your touque converter may or may not be unlocking, as it is supposed to when you try to accelerate past a certain point.

Also try unplugging the KS and see if the car runs worse.

ok i tried it and i was able to switch in and out of O/D until i went passed 80 mph and then it stopped working, in fact on one instance when i turned O/D on the rpms actually jumped up by about 300-400.

So what you are saying is that if you are going , say, 90 in 3rd, and you turn on the O/D, that the RPM's actually increase? This is not a good thing - sounds like lockup clutch in the torque converter as of now...

Let me think about this for a minute, I want to look at some stuff...

If this is indeed a tranny problem, it is going to have to be diagnosed by transmission shop/someone who can physically look at the car and see/feel how it runs. I don't want to have you going in a million different directions and replaceing stuff, as I don't really thing I can make an informed decision by what you are telling me...

If it were me, I would take it to a shop and let someone drive it, atleast they can tell if they think it's in the tranny. If it's not, then we can go a little further as far as pointing you in the right direction to tracking it down if it is in the engine somewhere. I just don't want you to spend alot of time trying to find an engine driveability problem it it's in the tranny.
