H3 Bulbs (Foggies) @ 130W ?

I need some H3 bulbs for my 2000 Maxima. Went to Autozone and they are charging like $35 for the Sylvania CoolBlue... I think it is overpriced and I went to check online...

While searching, came across this page: http://www.rallylights.com/hella/H3.asp

Does that make sense? 130W H3 bulbs? Are they safe? And they only cost $5 !

They also have Xenon H3 @ 100W Blue for $28 a pair.

I'm not sure what to get... is that right to afirm that any H3 bulb will work in my car?

Thanks!

i think it's safer to get bulbs that are not so high wattage. on my old car i had h3 55w that claims to equals to 130w...not sure about that but it was sure brighter than stock 55w ones. try looking for something like that.

That seems kind of high, don't want to melt anything.

I totally agree! stay with the 55w bulbs or close to that - don't want to melt your wires

Hopefully an electrician will chime in on this. Heat's caused through resistance. So if you don't wanna melt your wires, reduce resistance. Insulate, and use grease on the contact areas.

As for cracking the lens due to heat, There's some member cars that have been in 120deg temps, I feel pretty confident that stock fog housing can take heat from the bulb.

I would be concerned with bulb life tho.

Dont do it, I ran 100w for a short time and the reflective material inside peeled off.

Heat's generated through dissipated power, which is usually a byproduct of resistance (but not proportional to it). When you reduce resistance in a single resistor-battery circuit, you generate more heat as more current is running across your resistor and the voltage drop won't change, resulting in greater power dissipation.

In short, stay away from 130watt fogs, something will definitely melt, flake or crack. If you want brighter bulbs go for HIDs, although I wouldn't really condone that either as you're going to be badly blinding everyone.

How about 4.5K HIDs for the foggies? Too much as well?

Also, how long does HID bulb last compared to standard halogen bulbs?

I just bought some 6000k fog lights, I'll post pics when I get them. I'll see how they look with my 4300K.

130W for a regular Halogen will probably burn out in about 3 weeks, and during that 3 weeks probably destroy your factory wiring!
HIDs run at about 35W, last 20 times as long, and are about 3times brighter. go with HIDs!!

With HID's high output (and white-ness) combined in appropriate "fog" situations, sounds like it would cause a whiteout, where you couldn't see where you're going.

I ended up buying the regular Sylvania Sylverstar (or whatever they are called) because I believe HIDs are still overpriced and they are going to drop even more on price. You already see a lot of competition selling them and bringing price down.

I'll stick with the Sylvanias for now and when time comes for the replacement, i'll upgrade to HIDs.

Great! I believe Sylvannia SilverStars are way to go if you don't want to get HIDs just yet. I believe they just came out with a SilverStar ULTRA, which are supposed to be whiter/brighter than the original SilverStars, (...and still are not high wattage which is a good thing)

I am actually really satisfied with them... and they now match my SilverStars headlights (before I had the stock foggies, and compared to the Silverstarts they were a bit yellowish).

All is great now, i just want to see how long they last.. and I run my foggies during the say as well.
