Last night after doing my workout, I tried to start my car but all I got was the dreaded click, click sound indicative of a dead battery. I get my jumper cables from the trunk and called a friend to give me a jump. We hook them up, the lights go bright but the car wont start. We double check the hook up, (its good) then my friend says, "damn you got a water cell battery." I look and immediately know what the problem is, no water in the battery. I wash my car at least twice a week and top off my fluids each time and never noticed that I didn't have a maintenance free battery. I checked each cap and they were bone dry. My question; why in 2003 would any car maker still be using water cell batteries instead of maintenance free ones? I topped them off and left the car over night, (outside) of course the next day it started right up and has for the last 5 times I started it, but I bought a new battery anyway. I'm still mad at myself for not really noticing the battery but I still question why Nissan would do such a stupid thing. I actually thought those batteries were only in military Hummers and those "green" cars that people in California seem to love so much. Sorry for the long rant but if you have one either check your fluid or get rid of it. I got rid of mine.

 

Does it say Nissan on it? I don't believe that's an OEM battery, even my OEM '95 was maintenance free, and every battery we installed at my old dealership was the same.

 

lol.... yea i don't think dealers use water cell batteries anymore..

 

We have three Nissan cars---1995 Max, 2000 I30, and 2003 Murano. All came new with the battery that requires periodic distilled water to be added. Why do they use this type of battery? Don't know!

 

I checked it out and it reads, "shin kobe manufacturing motor company, distributed by Nissan". Its definitely the oem battery that came with the car from Japan. Thats freaking amazing, I personally had not seen one of these since around 1992 when I had my last Saab.

 

Ive noticed that on a few customer cars when i put in a new battery that some are still the old maintenance req'd batteries.

 

My 2000 came with that kind of battery. It died on me in 2006 but after adding water, it came back to life and lived another year! Finally it died completely in 2007. During that time I *always* carried a portable jump start gizmo in my car. When I had to use it two times in a day, I went to Costco and got me a new battery.

So, yes, you could get another year from it but do carry a portable jump starter in your car.

Thats a good idea sontakke but I just bought a new battery and took the old one to the recycling center. But now I have to buy another battery tie down since the new battery is slightly wider than oem and the tie down doesn't fit anymore and I can't stand having the battery sliding around and possibly damaging those expensive HID headlights.

 

My costco dry battery fits like a glove. It's just kinda cheap looking.

a battery is $40 bucks at walmart. stop complaining. it's general maintenance. it's like complaining about how much a syn vs dino oil change costs.

 

i bought a new car battery from someone off ebay. lol. only 20 bucks.
