Rattling/Grinding noise coming from front end, 97 SE 5spd

Hey all,

I have a strange noise that no one seems to be able to pinpoint. I first noticed this after I had my transmission rebuilt. Initially it would only make a faint rattling noise when I would turn hard right and accelerate.

Unfortunately about a month ago I ran over a rather large chunk of road debris (tire re-tread) and then noise has gotten even worse. It now makes a loud rattling/grinding type noise either turning right or going straight, but only during acceleration, I let off the gas and it goes away. Turning left and accelerating does not make any noise whatsoever.

From inside of the car it sounds like it is really close, like the middle near the firewall, maybe even closer, near or around the shifter. At times I can actually feel the vibration through the floor, but not through the shifter. I have had both left & right CV joints replaced, clutch was replaced when the transmission was rebuilt about a year and a half ago.

I was able to get under the car yesterday, started it up, put it in gear... but no noise. Turned it hard right, gave it gas, nothing. So right now i'm at a loss to what it could be. Any insight on what it might be would be appreciated.

Thanks!

I just had this same problem fixed.... believe it or not.. it was my exhaust. check and make sure the brackets are still working (mine were broken) No one could figure it out for a long long time (over 2 years) and i had my CV replaced (it was cracked... never fixed the problem) So, last week I bought a new exhaust and had it put in... 800 bucks but it worked. the pipe was rusted and the brackets let go a long time ago and its just been hanging there... i had no idea, the muffler was attached and didnt move. So I had from the cat to the muffler replaced. also, I've heard tie rod ends can be the cause as well.

wheel bearings.

Typically the race develops cracks, so when the bearing spins around at a certain speed it causes the vibration you are hearing.

You need to listen to it with a stethoscope and see if you can pinpoint the noise.

I had this happen in 2000 and it sounded HORRIBLE.
