Well assuming your keeping your tranny then it doesnt matter, but whatever is safest. Its probably easier to take it out separate, you'd to get that engine at a crazy angle to take it out in one piece.

hey

Does the intake have to be completely submerged to hydrolock??
Can it happen from just spraying it accidentally at the car wash...?

Yes.
No.

Think about it this way. Put a straw opening 1/3 of the way in water, suck through it, and see how much water gets all the way up. Point is, water is harder to suck up because it weighs more.

TO the OP: Man that sucks. What kind of CAI are you running?

Water entering the engine doesn't necessarily mean it has hydrolocked. How have you confirmed this?

Yeah im curious to see if it actually hydrolocked. Did you drive through a huge puddle or something and like stop and idle in it?

You can take out the trans first then the engine or you can take it out all as one, which is a little harder, but you cant take out just the engine and leave the trans.

I suggest taking out tranny first since that's the way we did it.

hydrolock

Hi guys well let me put it this way , it almost happen a few times but this time it really did it .. I was driving down a hill not too steap but a hill and it pour like you wouldn't belived it an car drove next to me and hit the the water and it cover my car with water a sec later my car die since I was goin down the hill I pop the clutch and nothing to my amazement I try again BIG mistake I coast down the hill and the engine would not turn so I waited a few hours but to no avial , so the next day I got it to start and to my freaking good luck when it start it it made this clacking noise which it is the piston rod hitting the cylinder wall , plus the front left rear cylinder is not complitly firing the gas (the spark plug is dark).. so know I'm in need to swap the engine ..

Thanks guys for your replies !!

I was under the impression that although you don't really need to, you could remove the engine with the trans still in the car, supported by the trans mount and a floor jack supporting it from below. Then again he is a 5MT, I can see not being able to get away from the input shaft, the post I had read about was re: 4AT.

You could do it like that, but why? Taking out the trans is so easy anyways. Plus, when you go to put the engine back in you are going to have less room to maneuver because the transmission will be in there.

Oh I know it's easy, I'm on my 4th

It would really serve no point, but I was just confirming that you could, should you for some random reason have a reason to. I can imagine someone would try it just to avoid removing axles, trans mount, and trans fluid/gear oil.

Basically any time you would save not removing the trans would be made up by trying to navigate your way around all the crap you left in, its not worth it.

Update on hydrolock engine

Hi guys here is an update , So I decided to swap the engine this last weekend so I didn't want to drive my car for obvious reasons but my stupid *** borther-in-law said is ok to drive since the noise wasn't that loud 2 m inutes from his house I heard the most disturbing noise it was like this CLANCK CLANK and pieces flying out from the bottom of the car but the car ran fine 30 seconds later I hear CLANK CLANK again and all hell broke loose I saw parts flying again and smoke 20 seconds before I get to my brother-in-law's house the car cathes on fire so know I'm waiting how much they give me for my car .. if any in the Mass area is selling a car cheap even if the engine is gone .. let me know ..

Thanks to all ..

If you're a beginner.. it might be easier to drop the tranny out first, then take the block out... put the new block in and bolt the tranny back up... it will be a pita to leave the tranny in the car and line up the input shaft with the new motor on re-installation... i'd think... the tranny is a lot lighter...

My question,

How can going DOWN a hill and in heavy rain cause something like this to happen since he did not say he was in a puddle...he was going down a hill. Won't the water just all run off the car?? I don't see how this can happen.

He didn't hydrolock his engine, more than likely he just beat it to death.

The VQ is an amazingly stout motor and would require considerable amounts of torture to kill it. As long as you are not boosting it to death, or running the car with no oil, no coolant, the engine would last quite a long time.

I have seen many high mileage VQ engines torn apart in junkyards with the pistions and cylinders looking in very good shape.
