Pretty good weather today

I hit up the track with maxmaxima91 and some friends today. Weather conditions were pretty awesome - low to mid 50s and baro in the 30.05 range, no wind to speak of.

I'd previously run 14.51 in my beater and I knew if I was ever going to run a 14.4 in it, this would be the day (since my good car is getting close to being put back together, that'll be getting all the track time in the future). I didn't expect to pull off what I did today.

I made 7 runs I believe today. Here's the best one - DA was 630' for this run. I also ran a 14.36 on a 2.07 60' time.

Those are the two best 60' times I've ever pulled on street tires. The 14.36 was taped by a guy I kind of know. I got his email address so hopefully he will rip it and send it to me, if he does I'll post it up.

Race weight showed as 3050lbs but the scale was showing 60lbs before i even got on it, so 2990lbs. Weight reduction was spare tire, trunk carpet and cardboard. I had just over 1/4 tank of gas indicated. I forgot to take my jack out I just realized, not that it matters much, probably only weighs 7lbs or so.

I had them at 24psi. The times were pretty surprising. I was figuring 14.4s maybe high 14.3s after I made my first couple passes, based on the relationship between my 1/4 mile times and 60' times I usually pull. It's about modulating the clutch just right - there was a very fine line between proper modulation keeping the car at the limit of traction throughout first gear and just spinning the tires or bogging.

Very nice Neal. Excellent 60 ft.

Which rims are on there and what rpm did you launch at?

I wanted to get out this weekend too, as you said - good weather, but just couldn't swing it. I'm still hoping to get 1 or maybe 2 more track days in yet this year though, see if I can drop a couple tenths before the end of the year.

95-96 SE sawblades - tires are Touring TAs I think. I don't really pay attention to my RPMs on launch anymore I just go by feel, somewhere in the 2000rpm range. I'm concentrating on just slipping the clutch properly (btw you could smell clutch pretty strongly after those 2.07s).

Ok cool that's about what I figured. On hard street launches I used go from about 2500-3000 (on SE wheels though) and just use the clutch to modulate. I've always found it easier to do that (work the clutch) rather than modulate the throttle. Do it too much though and bye-bye clutch, hehe.

Why am I not surprised? If anyone was going to do it, it would be Neal. What's your launch technique?
Congrats!

Lots of clutch slip. Like I said before I don't really have a technique I can put into words other than going by feel. I couldn't tell you how much throttle I give it off the line really, I don't really think about it. But I'm slipping the clutch to keep the tires at the limit of their traction- sometimes it works and gives you 2.07 60' times, sometimes I get a bit to aggressive and spin the tires really bad.

would you happen to know what rpm you hold before launch?

somewhere in the 2000-2500ish range, but i don't make an effort to set it at any specific point. I just give it a little gas and watch the tree.

Amazing, just amazing. I don't know much about drag racing, what would a set of slicks do to your time. Would it be enough to bring you into the 13's because that would make some 5.5 genners with headers just cry.

Slicks might get him high 13's. He's already run as fast as 13.4 on slicks a couple years ago with some bolt ons (different car but still 4th gen, on a 1.8x sixty foot IIRC). Goes to show you what a good driver can do with these cars. And note that's not even the quickest 3.0 either...

I don't think this clutch would hold up to how I'd launch it on slicks but if it did, it might just get me there. I would drop .4 seconds right off my 1/4 mile when I put the slicks on my other 4th gen, that was with a .25-.30 second drop in 60' time usually (say 2.20 average on street tires, vs 1.90 average on slicks). this time, I was able to pull a much better 60' time on street tires though, so I might only drop .15 seconds or so off my 60' time, which would probably be about .25-.30 seconds off my entire 1/4 mile ET. So it would get me pretty close. It'd take a just perfect run to eek out a 13.999 (which incidentally, was my ET the first time I ever broke into 13s with my old car back in 02 I think it was.)

but I really don't think the clutch in this car would be able to handle very many runs on slicks. I was smelling it pretty good after pulling those 2.07 60' times.

One thing to remember is that the only real reason I'm running times like this is launching, shifting, and good weather. The car's only trapping 94.x mph. while a strong trap for a stock 4th gen, any bolt on 4th gen or stock 5.5 gen would yank me pretty well, regardless of what times they might have run at the track.

What clutch is it.. (stock Nissan?) My stock clutch lived just fine doing lots of 6400 rpm dumps on slicks. Well almost full dumps, little bit of slip, more like a very fast roll-on. But it's the slipping that kills it I think, if it doesn't slip for long then it might be ok...

I'm sure it's just some pos key value or something. the guy i bought it from had just repaced the clutch before i bought it, i bought the car for $1000 and it was barely driveable because of bad coilpacks, so I'm sure he didn't spend the money on a real oem clutch. my 96 max replacement clutch (probably key value as well, I didn't know anything about clutches back then and just had the shop put in whatever) held up to launches on slicks fine too but this one I can tell sometimes is not as grabby as that one was.

I don't believe in factory freaks either. back a couple years ago when I raced briguymax he beat me 4 of 7 runs. this car is no freak, it's just about how it's driven and getting those rare good days at the track, a lucky launch, etc.

I'm not putting any mods on this car, I was about to part this thing out a couple weeks ago because of a starting problem i was having. i don't have enough money to do what i want to do to my good car that i haven't driven in almost a year, i'm certainly not wasting any of it on this car.

Amazing job Neal. I still visit the forums to see if guys like you have done stuff like this!

If I won the lottery I would send you a Y-pipe, Mevi and your old JWT ECU. (plus a thousand dollars to better the condition of the car) I am sure you would easily run mid 13's on street tires.

U power shifting? I have 90k on my oem clutch and i have beat on the car every day. Clutch dumps all the time. Never power shifted. Really i don't understand how people toast their clutches so fast... unless power shifting.

Trust me, Neal's car is not a "factory freak". The car isn't pretty, but runs well.

Heck, Neil and I went out to lunch when we were doing the supercharger install on my Mustang. Neil shifted so fast, he lost a belt!
