93 max or 98 civic...your opinions please.

Ok guys so heres the deal i need a winter car becuase my 96 is modded and done too much to drive this winter.

Even recently painted so i dont want to drive it in winter anymore..So im searching for a winter car and the price range im in is 500-1200 dallors.

Heres where i need opinions.Theres a 93 auto fully loaded, leather, and everything for sale for 500 ono.Heres the catch the manifold is cracked. Now i can get another one from here for cheap and pay my buddies step pops shop 500 maybe less to fix it. The car is already licenced and ready to go.

My buddy is fixing up and selling a 98 5spd civic coupe. Now he's looking in the price range of 1200-2000 dallors for it.Its going to be sold inspected, licenced and ready to go.Its getting new/used motor and trans with 150k on it.Flat black paint job.Cai,udp.And just the general maintence of it.He wants alot for it but i kinda see why.

Now my 96 i have now is auto but i will be converting next summer i hope.So i need a vehicle to learn standard on.I cant find any 5spd maxima's licenced and ready to go for 500 or 1000 bucks. So im leaning alot towards the civic but its hard on my wallet right now.

So should i just go for the maxima or get the civic?(i know its a civic and i feel like im cheating on you guys but i need to learn stick and my real love is my 96)

Andy

I'd get the civic for having the 5sp and being a bit newer.

^ Personally, I wouldn't buy a beater that was older than 94-95. And you already know the history of the civic, it's newer, 5 speed to learn on, etc...

I'd go with the Civic. You'll have an economy car and a Max that is fun to drive.

do you mean civic? and why unfortunatley? Honda's are very well built and reliable cars. Just because there are a lot of stupid people out there that modify them doesn't take away from the cars ability.

And Yes I'd agree with everyone else, the civic is the best choice for this. Plus if your maxima ever goes down for some reason this is still a nice car that you can drive daily while you're waiting.

Not a Honda fan, and I like third gens, but I'd go with the Civic. You know the owner and have some history on the car. A $500 beater can suck money like a vampire sucks blood.

Thanks guys...well i guess ill have to be a man and take it up the *** and drive a civic lol.It sucks he wants so much for it but it will be worth it i mean the car will last llike another 150k and its a d16 motor with the ***** trans going into it.Basically the transmission is the best one for feul economy and comfortable driving.on 40 bucks of gas ill get like 6-700k so the gas mileage will be a big bonus.

civic sounds like a decent car, good winter beater, and it's 5sd. your going to love the good gas mileage, save you more money to put into the max. good luck with your buy

Easy fix, buy a security system. That is one downfall to Honda's, and yet in this situation it easily beats the 3rd gen.

Just buy two . On top of that the civic will need it more then the max, even though the max may be more worthy of it then the civic.

Its almost a guarantee that there is a lot more wrong with that Maxima than a cracked manifold. If its a VG, that A/T will be dead soon. Most likely engine mounts and various bushings need replacement as well.

Yep, I had a short-lived '92 GXE beater last year and the tranny went south around 126k miles. I'd probably go for the Civic because it's newer and a stick.

That's what I was thinking. Stay away from VG autos, unless you know it's been properly rebuilt recently. Even then...I have heard too many bad stories about them.

I would get the civic because of the better mpg, too.

Not to be an ***....

But why do people always make such a big deal about learning to drive manual, if you cant learn it in a day, well sorry but you are just retarded and SOL.

Civic, all day, in my opinion though id try and find a small 4wd truck or an older jeep cherokee for a beater.

^^You have a point I didn't think of. Picking up a 4x4 would be a good decision for a fun/winter beater. Plus you can get a Wrangler 5spd for cheap, although if you wanted to get the good gas mileage you'd only get it from the 4 cylinder.

We have a Wrangler and it's a hell of a lot of fun to drive in all weather except rain, due to the small windshield and ****ty wipers. However in the snow, dirt, or just tarmac it's a fun car to drive.

Either way it's your choice of a beater, my only recommendation is to stay away from the 3rd gen auto.

I was going to say go with the civic untill I saw the last post stating the civic is now history so the Ford ranger is a good deal 4x4 and I have a friend that has one and he did not had to do much to it.

I agree with you. Besides it's always nice to have a car AND a truck.

go ahead n grab the civic...learning stick isnt hard at all annnnd u can always have a car to rely on cuz we all know hondas are invincible when it comes to mileage...so that means when u convert ur maxi to 5 speed this summer...ull still have a reliable car to drive while its getting converted...my only question is...y didnt u get a 5 speed maxima in the first place...is it reaaally that hard to find one? everyone tells me its hard to find them....ive owned 2 5spd maxi's in the past 6 months

honda...the car i replaced with my max was a 2000 civic EX 5spd. same body style as the 98, just slightly different front end and tailights... the trannies on these cars are so soft and smooth and easy to learn on... VERY easy to learn on. i miss the 30+ MPG on it..(my max gets about 18-21ish ...sux great car though.

also see if you could look for a 5th gen civic.. 92-95 those little buggers are bullet proof.
