B&G Sport Springs Installed !!
B&G Sport Springs Installed !!
I wanted to share my thoughts and experience with B&G Sport Springs for the 4th Gen (95-99) Maxima.
Cost: $181 shipped.
Vendor: Shox.com
Part#: 62-1-037 (manual transmission)
Company: http://www.bg-suspension.com/
Drop: 1.6" front and back
Struts: Stock. Have 47K miles on them. I'm still waiting for KYB AGX to come out.
Installation:
You will need the following:
Impact Wrench. You can buy an electric one at Sears or if you can rent an air compressor with the wrench from Home Depot.
Impact Socket metric - 19mm & 17mm deep sockets. Others can be regular depth.
Spring Compressor - Rent this at Pep Boys or Autozone. Some may disagree but please do not even ATTEMPT to try removing the springs without the compressors installed. You WILL get hurt.
WD-40 - This will loosen the rust and grease the nuts and bolts. This is not required but REALLY helped when removing the lower strut-knuckle bolts.
Jack Stands - The jack that comes with the car is lame. Lift the car using a hydraulic jack ($20 @PepBoys) and put the car on jack stands. Lift the front evenly & completely. Do not lift just one side. You may screw up the alignment.
Time - take your time to do this, expecially if you are doing it for the first time (like myself). It took me 10 hours to do this although I took three 1 hour breaks. Myself and with the help of my cousin, it was a total of 6.5 to 7 hours of work.
Driving Impressions:
The springs are red and match perfectly with my red painted calipers. The car sits noticeably lower than stock springs. The ride is firmer but firm in a nice way. It is comparable to my stock springs when driving on highway, however, you will feel most potholes. If you have a GXE or GLE and are used to that ride, forget lowering springs. All you SE owners should get used to it in no time. The body roll is almost non-existent. These definitely are "progressive" springs. Infact, allthough they are shorter, they have one extra coil compared to the stock springs. These are VERY NICE springs! The ride is better than I had expected after reading everyone else's posts.
Crouching Tiger...OH YEAH!!
Noise Issue:
I had a very minor noise (metal-against-metal) from front passenger spring. This is because the rubber insulation that came off the stock springs is not long enough to cover all necessary metal on the B&G Spring. Like I noted above, this is longer than stock springs. I used an electric wrap (Home Depot), cut about 4 inches, lifted the car and covered the top end of the spring, extending the insulator that came off the stock springs. The noise is GONE!!
I will post detailed installation instructions alongwith pictures as soon as I get them developed. I used the Haynes Repair manual and it was pretty sufficient.
