help-remove the crankshaft pulley on 89 maxima

I have to remove the crankshaft pulley to change timing belt. However, it is hard to remove it. I just bought a electronical impact wrench which can produce 345 ft lbs power. But what size is the crankshaft pulley bolt on 89 maxima? I tried 1 1/16 in socket, but it loosed when the impact wrench was turning? The 1 in socket is a lit small. There is not a socket size between 1 and 1 1/16 in in Kragen. I tried 26 mm socket also, and it is a lit small. But the 27 mm seems bigger than the 1 1/16 in one. Is there any special socket or tool for the bolt?

It's 27mm. You should be using a 6 point socket if possible also.

Just brace a breaker bar on something sturdy like the firewall and hit the starter for a second, it works wonders! Of course an impact gun is better, but not cheaper! Of course make sure its a secure setup, dont need flying tools in your wheelwell.

Wurd... I jammed a breaker bar on the ground and cranked it

On my last 3rd gen the pulley was frozen on. Ended up having to use an air chisel and take it off in chunks.

Did you get a pulley puller this time? AZ rented me one, but I ended up not needing it... all the oil leaks made it slide off effortlessly.

Thanks guys! I ended up with renting a air compressor from Hertz Tools Rental and buying air impact wrench. I think it will be helpful if someone else need it. I can lend you it.

A couple weeks ago I got a whole air compressor kit with impact gun, air ratchet, air guage/filler, air blower nozzle, 4 impact sockets, a finish nailer, and a 25 ft. air hose for only $150 from Home Depot. It was the floor model . I'm sure it will come in handy for projects like this once I dig in to all the stuff I have to fix. I also changed my Timing Belt back in '02 when I first got the car. I didn't know about the .org then, so I got creative and rigged up a tourniquet belt around the pulley that had a wet piece of cloth inside it to grip and was tied on the other end to a bar across the top of the engine. This made the pulley hold still until I could get it loose with the breaker bar. I'm sure one of the other suggestions given here would work much better.

Good luck!

Put the car in 1st gear, have someone step on the breaks and hit it with your impact gun, i just did this on my VE and it worked fine.
