help-remove the crankshaft pulley on 89 maxima
I have to remove the crankshaft pulley to change timing belt. However, it is hard to remove it. I just bought a electronical impact wrench which can produce 345 ft lbs power. But what size is the crankshaft pulley bolt on 89 maxima? I tried 1 1/16 in socket, but it loosed when the impact wrench was turning? The 1 in socket is a lit small. There is not a socket size between 1 and 1 1/16 in in Kragen. I tried 26 mm socket also, and it is a lit small. But the 27 mm seems bigger than the 1 1/16 in one. Is there any special socket or tool for the bolt?
Just brace a breaker bar on something sturdy like the firewall and hit the starter for a second, it works wonders! Of course an impact gun is better, but not cheaper! Of course make sure its a secure setup, dont need flying tools in your wheelwell.
A couple weeks ago I got a whole air compressor kit with impact gun, air ratchet, air guage/filler, air blower nozzle, 4 impact sockets, a finish nailer, and a 25 ft. air hose for only $150 from Home Depot. It was the floor model
. I'm sure it will come in handy for projects like this once I dig in to all the stuff I have to fix. I also changed my Timing Belt back in '02 when I first got the car. I didn't know about the .org then, so I got creative and rigged up a tourniquet belt around the pulley that had a wet piece of cloth inside it to grip and was tied on the other end to a bar across the top of the engine. This made the pulley hold still until I could get it loose with the breaker bar. I'm sure one of the other suggestions given here would work much better.
Good luck!
