Painting Brake Callipers
Painting Brake Callipers
I know that this really isn't a big MOD to your Max, but i'm getting rims and I want to do mine. Does the painting have any side affects on the performance of your brakes? What types of paint do you suggest I use, and where could I buy them from? Oh yeah, as you can see I drive a white max, do you think that blue callipers would look good? I need some real good instructions and advice to follow, so any comments are appreciated - thanks!

unless you do it wrong, there should be no effect on your braking. You just paint the outside of the caliper and tape everything else off (rotors, pads, brake lines, etc)
www.fobart.net/ryan/maxima/calipers.html has some stuff on it
there are a few other how-tos for the maxima about this somewhere too that you will find with search
also, try google.com and look up "paint brake calipers" or something like that and you'll find TONS of pics and info; not necessarily for the max, but it's just about the same for every car
use high temp engine paint from any auto parts store; it'll cost you about $5 or so
I did mine silver not too long ago and they look pretty nice
okay.. you ask for instructions.. we give you instructions, then you come back and ask us if they're correct?
Why even bother to look if you're just going to come back here and ask the same stuff again?

or you can just use brake parts cleaner (from auto store) by itself and it will work out pretty well
I dont think primer is really necessary; many people put a coat or two of clear coat on at the end to help protect the paint
YEAH OK!

I would def. use some clear coating.. It helps to protect the paint and it also help when your trying to get all the brake dust off. Thatts the biggie. You will have to clean them like once a week. Atleast I do. And some people say to use the high temperature paint. I dont see where that is really ness. I used regular paint from Advance Atuo that almost matched the color of my car and it seems to be working fine. They have been painted for more than a year now. Hope this helps

get out and go rub your hands on the calipers and rotors for a little while and then decide if you think maybe the brakes do get hot after driving
maybe the paint you got is better than others, but I would definitely recommend using high temp stuff so it wont bubble, peel, or melt off
I used the Folia Tec stuff. It's awefully expensive, but you don't need to clear coat it and it has lasted for YEARS and still looks very good. It's epoxy based and is very durable. You don't have to touch it up every couple of years. Can't believe how it still looks after almost 4 years. Worth it in my oppinion.
