This is the question I will be facing in the next few days. I ordered my rebuild kit (finaly!) ... but I didn't order shims. Is it "ok" to use the old shims? If not ... where can I get new ones without waiting several days for shipping? I was told by a mate of mine that does trans work that I should just re-use the old shims, things will go back together just like they came apart .... but I dunno.

Per the FSM you are to re-assemble and measure to get the proper shim thickness.

 

If by chance, you come up with the same number, then it should be okay. I'd mic the present shims though, make sure they haven't somehow worn down over time.

 

Don't risk it. Assemble per FSM, measure, measure again, then order the shims you need. It's worth a few days waiting to do it right and do it once. The diff. will start to fail soon enough if you don't.

Suggestions:

You can re-use your old shim unless they're damaged. Usually they are fine. The pair of shim sizes suggested by Nissan is not the only two shims that will work. Do the arithmetic and do plus one size on one shim and minus one size on the other and get the same thing. So write down a couple of shim pair options before calling Nissan. If Nissan is still taking too long, you can buy the thicker shim sizes and pay a machine shop $10 to grind them down to the proper thickness.

I find the mainshaft and input shaft shims tend to be correct (or unchanged from original, whatever the case may be).
