Noise coming from belt area

When my car is running there is a horible noise coming from the belt area. when i turen my ac/heat on the noise will go away.recntly(3 months ago) i had my belt tightened because it was squealing. Could the person have overtightened it causing my belt tensioner to go?
i have looked at a diagram of ours belts and the only 2 things i think could be wrong are the air conditioner compressor or the tensioner(idler pulley). is there any way to test if it is either one before i go and replace them?

one way to test the idle pulley is take a long screwdriver, and put in on the top of the idle pulley bolt and put the other end on your ear and see if its coming from there.

mine was doing the same and i found out it was my a/c compresser

I had the exact same problem - mine was the compressor as well. Not so much the ocmpressor itself, just the clutch actually. I got a whole new compressor ($179 rebuilt from NAPA), but IIRC they make a new clutch that you can install that is cheaper than a whole new compressor...
