What are the symptoms of a bad starter?

I here a faint whining noise when I start my car in the cold and it fades as the car warms but it is still there. Mostly when I accellerate. Bad Starter?

So, my problem probably isnt the starter? Maybe a loose vacum line like they were saying in the 5th gen thread?

when my started went out, I noticed the few times I started it before it finally went, that it was taking longer to crank.

Yeah, mine is taking longer to crank. The sound is like a low "wheeeeee" almost like someone humming.

Does it sound like an electrical humming?

you really need to give more info on something like this
ie. where is the noise coming from, what does it sound like, when exactly does it do it, etc.

But I doubt this has anything to do with the starter, after the car starts, the starter has no purpose, it doesn't do anything.
if its an electrical hum its likely the alternator.

+1 also the intervals between each turn over slowed down until it just stopped

mine makes a wh000000ooooo sound as soon as the engine fires. It almost sounds like the starter is slow to retract from the flywheel. The guy that sold the car to me over a year ago, said that it was just replaced (showed me a dealer's receipt & everything). Go figure.

Mine too! Can't figure it out. It dosent retract off the flywheel right away. Only dose it when it's cold though. After the car is warm it dosen't do it anymore.

From sitting inside in the drive seat, the sound comes from directly in front of me. Toward the driver side wheel.

Mine seems to do that all the time. I hope i don't fry it. What i try to do is just time it well enough to let go of the key as soon as i feel some ignition (which is almost instant on a cold/fully warm start, thanks to my new battery, alternator, and fresh grounds).

Now, lukewarm (like after it's been sitting for an hour in 30* temps), it usually takes a little more to get her fire, so i can never time that correctly

yeah mine takes a while to start the engine but i think i have a bad crankshaft sensor. I recently replaced my starter(had to replace it at my work parking lot when it was like 5 degrees outside) but all mine did was just click click. I even took a heavy hammer and swinging at it with no results. sometimes thats a good sign when your starter is going out when you have to hit it with a hammer to start your car.(i had to do that before)

Bump, I have to click mine 3 or 4 times in the cold for it to start, and when it does it makes a quick screeching noise then stops. When it warms up, it consistently takes two click. Cleared off the erosion at the +/- points on the battery, so Im thinking starter?

The times before it starts, it gives a brief electric click but no start

There are a million posts for no start, slow start, cranks but wont start issues. Search for the better threads and you will find good trouble shooting advice from myself and others.
There are multiple switches and relays that could all cause your issue. Just be sure to take a systematic approach of troubleshooting.
Start here Starting problems with a 96 Maxima and yes I already searched stickies

In my case, about 7 years ago in the winter, the starter would make a grinding sound sometimes as if it didn't retract. I know some guys took it out and lubed it. I let it go for about 7 years. Then this fall, it would sometimes click, and nothing happened. I ordered a new starter but didn't put it in, and the car died. Put the new starter in, and 2 1/2 mos. later, same thing. I'm planning on putting the replacement starter in tomorrow (lifetime warranty).

Unfortunately, we all know how junkie auto parts are nowadays, 1/2 the time made in *****. If this were 10 years ago, we would never think of replace the starter every 2-3 mos. Kinda like the shell game with our rear calipers. but it is what it is.
