How can you tell suspension is going bad? (Weird FRONT RIGHT noise)

Car has 89K. Auto

At times during turns and even straight roads, bumps, or rugged road; I would hear some noise as if something was loose on the front right side.

I don't think it's the shocks/springs because the car doesn't bounce crazy and drives normal. It could be something small. Sounds like something is loose or the boot of something is rubbing against something.

Could it be the drive axle? Automatic transmission? Or something like brakes rubbing, or suspension parts crapping out? I cannot pinpoint what the exact problem is, though I can tell it is mostly not a brake thing; more like a suspension part thing.

I plan on taking it down to a mechanic but I just want to prepare myself of parts i might need to order or whatevers.

Thanks
Merry Christmas.

My front Illuminas make a bit of a knocking sound over small road bumps. I hear it at low speeds, under 20mph. Car seems to ride fine, actually fantastic still. I've had the entire front suspension apart, everything is tight. They make the noise when they are set on 2 or 3, but not on 1, 4 or 5. I know it's the strut, most likely the valving inside the strut. I think I'll replace them with a set of the blues this spring.

It sounds like something is loose though, but it shouldn't be because I did nothing prior. But I understand sh8t happens.

I discovered 2 things:

1- pads worn out (these are PBR MM)
1- p/s was kinda low.

Well to me, a squeek would be the sound brake pads make when it's life is towards the end. But it's not that sound.

A clunk would be a BOTTOM out on pot holes? It isn't really that sound.

It makes this sound like something is rattling a tad a bit loose. Maybe brake shield rubbing on something (but doubt it). But through driving and turning, it does feel like it could be more like the suspension.

I'm gonna just jack it up and take some pics. maybe you guys can spot it. But it drives normal. However mostly on turns and bumby roads it makes that noise. I doubt its the axle though, no ripped boots.

Sorry to hijack your thread. I have the same problem, when replacing my oem suspension with H&R and Agx kyb's, I replace the strut bearings as well because that's where I thought the noise came from. After changing them and tightening everything the noise went away or so I thought.

It's back, almost a loose clunking sound that I can feel in the bottom of the floor near the pedal and almost feels like it has to do with the steering. When I hold the breaks and turn my wheels side to side it sounds like there's play and a clunk clunk can be heard..It can't be the suspension..

Fishy do you have something similar?

generally with a noise like that it is the strut mount. its like a rubber piece at the top of the strut assembly that cushions movement between the top of the strut and the body. it could also be control arm bushings or stabilizer bar bushings. make sure everything is tightened down.

I think this is what it's called. I checked the tower mounts and the front right did have something cracked. *Aside from the BOOT all gone.

I think my POWER STEERING is leaking as well. The hoses and tubes are quite worn and expanded.

It is easy to replace? I plan on replacing and ordering a few things as well. I don't think i can do this though..

Some thoughts that come to my mind:

1. Ball joint.
2. Control arm bushings.
3. Sway bar bushings (end link or frame).

the mount on the top of the strut assembly is nothing to replace.

take off the three nuts that hold it on in the engine bay and jack up that side. the whole assembly will come down and you put the new mount on. anti-cease helps if you put it on both sides of the mount to keep down noise. just make sure you have someone who can help line the bolts back up when you go to lower the car again.

check the stickies there is new stuff about this(if its your springs). It might be,that your new springs are worn in, it scraped the paint off so when u turn your wheel, the spring is turning, and where the paint is worn off it will make a noise.

Worth a shot.

Thanks again for the reply.

So:
1- just jack up and take off and replace

Try checking the strut mount or the wheel bearing

Fishy, do you have stock springs or a drop?
If you have a drop you probably wont need spring compressors.
If you have stock springs, spring compressors are only like $20-$30 i believe..

After you get the parts, i think i can put them in for you for way cheaper than the dealer or a shop would.

Are you sure it's suspension? I test drove a Maxima once that made noises when you made turns, and I think it was something with the axle that caused the problem...

I am not sure honestly. The car rides fine. It's just those sounds. And I am getting very very faint pull. I suppose everything is starting to crumble. Car is stock, no drops, no aftermarket parts.

I am gonna order the strut mounts for the right side and go from there. Axle looks fine, no rips in the boots.
