Wheel opinions please...

I got two deals available to me. i have to make a decision in the next two days, because one of the sellers is leaving for three weeks on tuesday.

The First:

FOR $350 dollars.....set of 4 18 inch G35 wheels with Falkien 225-45-18s with about 20%-30% tread left. the car it was on previously had some rubbing issues, so the edges of all 4 tires are scraped. they will need replacing.
the rims have some minor curb rash on the passenger front and rear and the passenger rear has a nick about the size of a BB.

\

The Second:

FOR $400 dollars....set of 4 17 inch MOMO wheels with two Ventus HR2 235-45-17 with about 70% tread left and two Nitto Extreme ZR 235-45-17s with about 80% tread left. There are no significant marks or curb rash damage. these rims are probably in the best condition ive ever seen for used rims.

Now before you go saying "its your car, do what you want" ill just tell you right now i like the G35 wheels more. they look better and i like the 18 inch size over the 17s. but the simple fact is that i am going to have to replace those tires before i can mount them to my car. so thats 350+500 (for the tires) plus alignment and mounting fees. almost 900 id say.

then theres the 400 dollar deal, which i could basically stick on my car tomorrow for half the price.

additionally, as ive mentioned in other threads about my wheel search, i want the biggest sidewalls possible becuase the roads here suck, plus there are about 4 poorly paved traintracks surrounding my house, which i hit daily. so if i got the 18s, according to the tire size calculator, i SHOULD be getting 225 or 235-40-18s.
if i were to get 235-45-18s (what is currently on the G35s), my size difference would be more than 5% which they do not recommend.
the 17 inch momos have 235-45-17s, and that difference from stock is less than 1%.

plus i dont wanna work the tranny to hard.

thanks

man the style is basically the same. since you want the sidewall 17" would be better, plus the tires and momo status. go 17".

but no matter what buy something, this is like your 1,000,001st "which wheel?" thread.

wheels are not a permanent decision. if you feel like switching it up you should be able to sell either one of those down the line assuming you don't mess them up.

well the first thread was about two different wheels - 17 inch 350zs vs. 18inch 350zs. that dude sold those, so they arent an issue anymore. and my second thread, which actually wasnt a thread, but a hijacking of someone elses dead "18x8 fitment questions" thread, was about sizing.

yes it possible im over thinking all of this, but $500-1000 is a lot of money for me.

id rock the g35 wheels. its more subtle and fits better. momo is a great brand but those wheels look like something konig would make.

-why would you need alignment after mounting new wheels ?
-the screw is missing on the momo cap
-cheaper is better, lighter wheels are better (mom is lighter here i think), I like the cleaner look of those G35 wheels

choose which factors are more important to you

i would go with the momo's and use a 205 or 215/50 17 tire so you have more sidewall that you are looking for, the G35 wheel look very good but you will be using rubberband's for tires.

you dont think i could run 45 sidewalls with the 18s?

the "tire calculator" says that it will be off by 5% if i run 45 sidewalls with an 18 inch rim

will that affect my spedometer? by how much?

also, how bad is it to be working the tranny that extra 5% ???
i know a couple of people on here who are running 235-45-18s on their wheels.

i really am hoping to not use 40s...

when judging sidewall you cant only go by the number, some tire makers have re-enforced sidewalls which would help to absorb bumps and vibrations.

financially you'll be spending a whole lot more on the G's having to buy new tires. I think the G's look better. the tires both have the same sideway so you might get the same result from all of them.

with the Momos you'll probably need hub rings in addition to new lugs (maybe) the G'z wont need rings

well i bought the G wheels yesterday. didnt put em on yet cuz i got home around 9pm.
the guy riding on them before had rubbing issues, so the tires have marks all around the outer edge. but they look safe still, so im gonna throw em on this weekend.

the tires they came with are actually 245-45-18 instead of 235-45-18.
and as i said two posts ago, that will offset my speedo by 4.86%....

so should i wait till i can get 245-40-18s or can i slap these puppies on ?

how bad is that 5% gonna be for my tranny?
is there anything else im not thinking about?

You made a good choice on the g35 wheels. The speedo will not change enough to make a difference i dont think. I was running 245/40/18 on mine for a while. They are a little big, but will work fine. I would run 235/40/18 on your next set of tires for it. These should not hurt your tranny in any kind of way.

why do you suggest 235-40-18s over 245-40-18s?

im assuming the 245 to 235 change wont matter on the g wheels?

I think it would look better, more wheel and less tire. If and when you lower the car, it will fit much nicer.

For starters, you are going to make your tranny work slightly harder by the mere fact that you bought larger, heavy rims. FWIW, a 24lb 18" rim is worse for your tranny than a 24lb 17" rim by the laws of physics.

By my calculations, your Speedometer will be reading 4.7% too slow, which means that when your speedo reads 60mph, you're really going 62.8mph. IMO, the difference is too great, and you're going to increase the odds of getting a speeding ticket.

I would've went with the MOMO's myself, but it's too late for that.

the sawblades with 205-55-16 tires are heavier than the g35s with 245-45-18s right?

so by the mere fact that i am reducing weight from OEM specs should help? or am i wrong?

I seriously doubt a 205/55/16 Sawblade setup is going to be lighter than a 245/45/18 setup. Why is everyone saying to run with smaller (xxx/45/18) for what the sidewall will look like, the first number pertains to how wide the wire is, while the second number is the sidewall height. (Though I think the O/P knew that) For rule of thumb, here are most popular choices for sidewall height on maxima's according to rim diameter:

16" = 55/50 (I am running 50 for added performance/rigidity)
17" = 45
18" = 40

Though if you're having rubbing problems with 245's on there, Just shoot for a 235/40/18 and look for very stiff sidewalls. (I am running 225/50/16's with Bridestone Potenza S-03 Pole Positions, with very stiff sidewalls and the tires do tend to absorb a lot of bumps for the size-- I'm coming down from 65's)

Either way, 45/18 just seems too big for a maxima IMO.
