6th gen bose headunit change

I went to circuit city to pick out a new mp3/ipod cd player to replace this skipping piece of bose junk only to be told something to the effect of it being impossible to do without completely gutting the entire system and installing new everything, which would cost a fortune...so im like ok why, he says its due to the ohms being different for the bose system. I dont know alot about car audio but apparently neither does he.

I go to a shop that only does car audio and he had no idea what the guy was talking about and said they were probably not familiar and scared to do it..and all I need is a harness, bracket, antenna wire, and thats it and gave me a quote of $350 for install and tax for a Pioneer Premier DEH-P500UB.

Anyone else install a new headunit who had BOSE with any problems? He said even my subs will be working...so I made an appointment for next week.

Second place was correct. Although I hope that cost included the HU itself.

Thanks pearl...I know eveyrthing here has been said one before, but we're all lazy. Yes, $350 with the pioneer headunit. Seems like a decent unit and i bet the sound will be way better than what it was with the Bose. Im psyched I can finally stop f*cking with Cd's for good now. Maybe I will get something in the trunk to go with it eventually like my last car back when I was 19. We'll see what happens. When that first guy told me it was a no-go without gutting everything I sort of believed him bc I heard on here that having BOSE causes difficulties when upgrading, maybe it all depends on how smart the installer is.

Yeah, sorry. Didn't mean to come off as rude (after reading it, I'm sure that's how it came off).

Seems like a good price you got, there. I ended up spending a bit more, buying heat gun, solder, etc...and doing it myself. However, now I know how to do it when I upgrade the HU further and already have the tools I need

Maxx, we're in the same boat, almost to a T. I too went to Circuit City only to be told the same by 'Firedog'. I knew a bit more because I visited here before going and told the kid that there is a special harness which allows connection to the Bose amp from an Aftermarket HU. He stood there corrected and quoted me about the same price ($350) for an install including parts and the unit.

I went to a very reputable installer in South Jersey and he layed it all out for me. Better than Circuit City did. He gave me options, recommendations, and answered all my questions about each unit. I told him my concern about losing voice navigation and he said they he might be able to wire an external speaker. Tomorrow I will get it done and post the results. Good Luck!!

Its done guys!! And let me tell you, I am more than satisfied. The Pioneer 5000UB head unit is exactly what I was looking for and I've finally got the 'premium' sound. Every sound is clearer than I could have imagined. I'm really disappointed in Bose/Nissan for holding back on their premium audio system and not giving it a quality HU the Max really deserves. Also, I looked at the Bose CD/Tape deck and there's a red sticker that says 'remanufactured', which means it failed before.

I didn't go with the amplified external speaker for the nav, but had it wired into Aux1 of the unit. All I have to do is switch over when I need to hear it.

Anyways, if you guys in South/Central Jersey, maybe even Delaware or Philly, are interested in a 1st class installer and service. Try Suburban Car Audio on White Horse Pike in Oaklyn, NJ. Here is a picture

Congrats! So that is what it will look like. Not bad at all. So if I understand it correctly, you just installed a new HU and kept everything else stock? Interesting.

My Bose HU is biting the dust. I hope to replace it with an Alpine this spring. I do have an external amp for my subs but all the rest of my speakers are stock. (The "stock" subs are no longer in the car). I'm thinking of trying the Rainbow separates but I'd really like to hear them before I buy them.

So what about the functionality of your dash screen and steering wheel controls. Do you still have all your previous functions?

Thanks! The dash screen is still functional displaying the HVAC temperatures and modes, navigation is still there as well as the fuel economy and scheduled maintainence. My steering wheel audio controls are disabled, but can be made functional with the PAC adaptor ($40-$60)? I'm debating if its worth it, how much could they do other than switch preset stations, contol volume and switch source. On top of that, my headunit came with a remote.

The 6th Gen Bose System has a sub!? Where is it located? I only thought it was an 8 speaker system. 2 x tweeters, 2x front doors, 2x rear doors, and
2x rear deck. With the new unit it sounds like the speakers have some serious bump to them almost as if there's a sub somewhere.

This spring I'd like to pick up a sub/amp. I can't remember whose max it was, but had a single sub exposed when the rear center armrest was down. I'm not looking for huge knocking bass, just a little bump. Maybe a single 10' and small enclosure, gotta conserve space.

Yeah they came with either 8in or 6x9 subs in the rear deck.

Here's what they looked like:

Here is what I replaced them with:

One installed. Picked them up from my man Nismos14

Thanks for posting photos. How do they sound without an enclosure? I had no idea subs could be mounted on the rear deck. What is the Dynamat for? Theres a little rattle in my rear deck now, I suppose I'd have to fix that when I open it up. That would be the ultimate space saver if I could just mount them on the rear deck. I'm curious about this!! Thanks

Those DLS speakers are actually made to be infinite baffle (no enclosure). They are great sounding speakers, I had a whole thread on replacing the stock subs with the DLS 8". http://www.6thgenmaxima.org/forums/viewtopic.php?t=2404

The dynamat was installed previously but yeah, the deck usually needs some help because it rattles. Mine still rattles, this spring I am going to work on eliminating it once and for all. The problem is really the deck cover.

You know for a quick improvement in bass...if you have a box in the trunk, just remove the stock subs. It really helped the bass pass from the trunk to cabin.
