nissan consult

nissan consult is awesome. datalogging and control over all sensors in the car, all engine parameters, no soldering, direct plug and play to your obdII straight to a laptop or the handheld programmer. Air/fuel and timing adjustments under $175 shipped...why havent i heard more about this on the forum. this thing is awesome!!!!!

I just received the consult, not the conzult but similar. I have not had chance to use yet because i am doing a retrofit with tsx projectors and cefiros and have not had any time to finish them. I suppose I could throw it in there real quick, considering all you do is plug it into the obdII port, but i know i would want to go drive it and use the datalogging and tune it. but i will wait another few days until the headlights are done. The conZult is only for the 300zx i believe in obdI trim. The consult can be used in most nissans with obdII. There is also the consult sx for use with the 200sx. It is unbelievable that i havent heard more about this on the forum. Here is the website to check out all this fun stuff. prepare to want...www.blazt.biz

I'm confused. What is the hardware you have? Does it plug into the Consult plug or the obd2? Please take a hi-res pic... pic worth... too many words.

This person is not actually using Nissan's factory scantool "Consult." They are using an aftermarket PC based diagnostic scantool.

Via OBD2 connector, is that correct? How's it change the air/fuel and timing adjustments?

Sadly I left the dealer before I had a chance to mess around with the CONSULT-III at all. Personally...reflashing the ECM or messing around with the car at all with a system that runs Windows? No thanks, too much chance of error there.

Yeah, Nissan Consult II is the ****.. I have one. Wish I knew how to use HALF of the things that it can do.. Very comprehensive unit.. test every sensor, datalogging, right down to testing lights, window motors, etc. Excellent unit!

FYI to those who think this uses the obd-2 port, it doesn't, it uses the consult port. Of course it doesn;t matter either way because all(?) maximas have both (95 and up).

Personally Consult III is crap! Thats my opinion though and yes the bootup lock up issues are a pain in the A#$

I am slowly getting better with the Consult II as far as functions
I just wish i could advance timing on my Max with it

ya you cant advance the timing on the 4th gens but I believe you can of 5th gen and up and what a hell of a difference 2 degrees advance makes on the VQ35. I was very impressed. I have advanced the timing on our 06 frontier(2.5L) parts truck, 2007 Altima Coupe, 2006 Altima SER, and quite a few 6th gen maximas. Its fun to play with all the stuff consult ll can do.
Mine started giving me issues today though, it blew the electronic parts fuse on everycar I hooked up to today. Using the generic scan tool to diag cars today was oodles o fun

The thing i dont get is why your average consumer would want a piece of equipment like this? If your not trained on how to use this tool, then what good is it? All "consult" is, is a diagnostic tool. Unless you work on cars for a living, Consult is a bad investment. Your average consumer isn't trained to understand the information that consult is used for. If your trying to get consult for performance. It wont do you anygood. There's so many other companys out there that make engine management modules for performance. Ones that give you more control over adjustments. Which cost less than the consult. What im trying to get at here is, Consult along w/ every other scantool is meant for diagnostic purposes. If you cant convert the data that these tools display into intelligent information on how the cars running, or how it should be running. what good is it?

haha i can see im not the only tech here that doesnt like the consult 3. Its such a pain in the ***. same with reprogramming the remotes for the 07 altima recall. Its a very cool unit, but it takes awhile to get use to using, the consult 2 is so much easier to use.

Seriously the consult 2 is so easy to use..plug it into either obd-2 or the consult port, turn it on, press engine, then let it do the system call, self diag results to check codes, work support for diagnostic related things..iac volume relearn etc..its pretty damn easy to use, i had no problem using it my first time and i figured out how to use it myself

Man, all you legit consult users are tempting me to obtain that gadget! And I'd get it just to play with it, cuz I totally agree with thien_trieu. I have a factory service manual, and some of the diagnosis (Dx) procedures are greatly simplified w/the consult. Where can I obtain one at a good price?

It wouldn't be worth it to get for a 4th gen, it's a pricey unit, Jesus. For the 5.5 gens, just get a Cipher or AE software, it lets you do just about everything you need to.

How much do dealerships charge for a scan?

I assume they use Nissian Consult to scan the code.

Just curious, where do you guys go to scan your cars?

Thanks!
Alex

...wherever. Pull the codes yourself, or most any auto parts stores.

Dealerships generally get $75+ to diag your Nissan with the Consult II/III Systems.. also $40+ to program keys and $100+ to relearn IAC. If you have a good Nissan base of friends/customers, it could be worth it to get one.. but only then. Unless you get a deal you cant refuse!

Thanks for posting this. I was just working on drawing up an ELM based card the other night. Now it looks like I'll build this as well.

The layout I made in PCB designer is ugly and I haven't tested it yet but if somebody is lazy I'd be glad to share it

I have etched the PCB and I'm just soldering components to it, but I need to make the "nissan connector" and then I will do some testing before I fry my max
I also dislike windows so I'll try to run the software under wine or dosbox

let me know when you guys get done. i have software to run with the cable (not from blazt) that i can share. i bought my cable for $60 shipped off ebay but the first one had a problem with not detecting the ecu when the car was running...haven't had a chance to test the replacement.

Now all components are on the PCB and I have made a cable out of a computer ATX connector and a parallel cable.

I have connected the device to my thinkpad and it seems to work maybe. I will test the clock frequency at the university tomorrow with an oscilloscope before I connect it to my Max. I don't have and oscilloscope in my student apartment. (at my parents place I would have)

www.abo.fi/~jonlithe/consult/

The .ps file shows my crappy layout. Both caps and resistors look like resistors and the polarity of LEDs has to be determined from the real schem and not the PCB copper pads. I used the schem from the .pdf but added a diode to the IGN wire, because some schems have it there, it can be substituted with a wire. Two other wire jumpers are also needed. One for the Xtal selection and one at the supply rails in the middle of the PCB.
I also added a low quality pic. (taken with my phone)

Sorry for my messy PCB and instructions!

I will get back to you if a dare to test this one
I really hope an ECU is tolerant!

I checked the clock signal with a scope today and found that it looks a bit odd. It is a square wave @ about 150 kHz as it should but it is between 7.5 and 10V, would it be better to just directly take the output from the 4060 which is between 0 and 5V? I have seen both alternatives in schematics.

Anybody know what levels a clock signal for a nissan should have?

It will probably not break my car so will test it if none of my friends have any comments

I'm sorry, I made a stupid mistake. Transistors were the wrong way. I missed the top/bottom view on the schematic but now it is fixed and clock signal (and data output) is between 0V and something like 12V when running the circuit with 13.8V.
I will test the circuit for real someday when I have time.

I have now tested my consult. The GND and IGN cables were at least ok as the power LED on the PCB lit up when I turned the key to ON position. But nothing else. I could not contact the ECU with ZTalk V1.0. I wonder waht software I shuold try next. First I thought this was only Z-series but then I read that it should work for most Nissans. Most other applications did not run out of box under wine but I guess I should keep experimenting.

No luck with my homemade consult
Nissan wants 43-53 euros just for connecting a cable to my car and telling me a few codes. This sucks. I would really hate to pay that for a few minutes of their time.

My consult does communicate with the ECU (leds flashing) but I get no codes or values. This makes me think it is a software problem. What software should actually work on a max? I tried many but some where intended for Z-series I understood.
I could try almost any software as I have a laptop with win XP available now too.

If the entire point of this is reading codes, you are aware you can do that yourself for free, right?
