Catalytic converter??

sup,

Heard a loud clicking sound in engin, sounds like the motor was knocking.
i checked the oil and the level was low??????
filled up the oil tank. next day check engin light came on, went to mechanic and he checked the computer, said it was the catalytic converter and reset computer. he said u might be able to get away with it by changing the O2 sensor. $110.00
catalytic converter - $547.00 oem part. ouch.
Anyone ever had this problem. Any websites? Any info will help.

Many things can be the root cause. If the cat is on its way out, it could be a number of different items that caused the cat to fail. it could also be a dying O2 sensor post cat.

If the cat is indeed dead, it may also be a side affect of running lean, which damages the cat. This can be the MAF sensor.

I need to replace my Cat on 02 maxima and an 02 sensor....dealer wants !1450 to do the job.. Ouch! there is a bad rattle from the cat falling apart and mechanic said it could suck back into engine and ruin it. Also it runs rough at high RPM 5000-6000 before auto shift. Is this caused by bad cat?

It's running rich that damages the cat. And I've seen Pre-O2's cause P0420's also. Check your PM's.

Run from the dealer, grab a cat off of the classifieds. Tis the truth that it could damage engine, but with the pre-cats in place it's not as likely unless it is a pre-cat causing the issues. Have an independant shop replace the o2 sensors and tell him you think there is a heatsheild rattling and see if he can find it, don't mention the dealers diagnosis.

fyi: I buy used converters, good or bad.

My 01 I30 just started throwing this code today. I'm just over 80K so I wont be able to get the ECU flashed under warranty. I don't know if thats something I can do myself or not.

I understand alot of folks are replacing the cat. If its the same cat I'm thinking of, can I not just get rid of the cat altogether and replace my y-pipe with something like cattman?
