Just got pwned at the stealership
CEL is for "BANK1 S2 O/2 SENSOR"
They recommend:new drive belts- $159.95, power steering flush $129.95, fuel induction service $119.95 and '60K MAJOR SERVICE' $419.95.
They've got the O2 sensor quoted on here at almost $500...thats gotta be wrong.
In the 60K service includes:
air filter
battery service- clean terminals, inspect cables, test bat condition
check and set timing
inspect brakes and parking brake
auto tranny drain and refill -i've got a 6mt so this is N/A
inspect all lights and headlights
balance and rotated tires
brake sys flush
inspect idle speed
courtey inspection (whatever that means)
road test
***************
that seems like alot of money but also a lot of work. What things might I, as a relatively unskilled but not stupid novice wrech jockey, be able to so myself? Labor on cars gets you every time...
Anything seem like they're trying to take advantage of?
thanks for the help

this topic has been discussed...look for it...or post in the newbie thread
bottomline: these inspections are a good free way for an owner to find out what work needs to be done...now do the work yourself

$420 for the "major" service is a bunch of crap:
In the 60K service includes:
1. air filter
$13 locally for NAPA gold; or buy in larger quantities at fleetfilter.com for savings like I do then its only $6 or so. Just ordered last week: my savings on just 2 air filters for the max pays shipping on the entire order.
2. battery service- clean terminals, inspect cables, test bat condition
prob worth $15-20. Just guessing here.
3. check and set timing
Arent our cars electronically controlled???!!! What is there to adjust? I'm confused on this one.
4. inspect brakes and parking brake
You can get this for free at many brake shops.
5. auto tranny drain and refill -i've got a 6mt so this is N/A
Yep.
6. inspect all lights and headlights
Hmmm...they work or they dont work? burned out bulbs? Another one I just dont get...
7. balance and rotated tires
Discount Tire will do it for prob $20-$30
8. brake sys flush
Shops around me want $80.
9. inspect idle speed
Another computer controlled, and look on here for what others get for idle speed...seems like mine is 7-800...another unlikely cost to the dealer. Seems like they could adjust it quite cheap if it were off, so not exactly sure on this one, either.
10. courtey inspection (whatever that means)
Probably just a walk-around and worth basically little. For benefit of the doubt lets just say it costs $30.
11. road test
You are probably the best judge of the car since you drive it all the time. They may find something you wont notice like suspension or wheel bearing or something, but keep in mind if they do then those would be added costs so the REAL cost of the road test is just their time. Lets say $30.
As you can see, not a whole lot of value here. I'd get the brake fluid changed and maybe consider the battery service, but beyond that this 60K service to me seems like a huge ripoff. You got, what, $100-$130 in it and they charge $420? Even if you had the idle checked/adjusted that would prob add $60 since really, how long would a tech spend on it? That seems like a gravy job. I'm no mechanic, but these techs know these cars and they know how to get the service done fast/cheap so it really cant take them all that long. I'd say the biggest time is the brake fluid.
That seems high on the belts, too. I got mine from Dave B for like $30 or so, cant remember, then had a buddy help me get them on...did it in like an hour.
Take it for what it's worth from me...just my $.02. It depends on what is of value to you, but if you want to go cheaper you have other options but it will take you more time than just one visit to the dealer.

Thank you, Mich. I didn't post this in the noob thread because i figured there was enough information to warrant a new thread and I really appreciate you taking the time to respond. I understand that you aren't a UTI grad or SAE certified or whatever but you've been around here alot longer than I have. I pretty much agree that alot of this stuff cant be too hard and one of my friend's brothers has just about every tool I could need in his garaage. (he's got a 95 protege putting down 343hp)
About the O2 sensor...I'm pretty sure i'm getting a cattman y-pipe so the bank 1 sensor 2 is located on that, correct? Seems like i'd have to take off that sensor anyways so replacing it then would be the smart thing to do ASSUMING its the right one.

Matt,
Not sure on the sensor thing. Lots of info on them on this site. Pic's too.
I am serious about getting the filters from that comp I mentioned. Somebody on here mentioned them and I found out about it last year and WOW, if you change your own filters it saves me 35% after all costs are figured, even shipping. Have to buy a few filters but if you have 2 vehicles like I do, I just buy 50$ or so and it would cost me like $85 locally, if I remember correctly. Just one way to save a few bucks, plus you always have one on hand.

Air Filter: hell yeah.. they cost less than $10 at auto zone.. just pop the old one out and pop the new one in... probably the easiest thing on this list.. do some research on the location of the air filer and clips holding it in
Battery Service: Take the connections off, clean all corrosion off, grease the terminals with a thin coat of battery terminal grease (like 2.99 at auto zone), and put them back on to prevent future corrosion. Take the car to auto zone to have them test the battery for you for FREE to make sure it's cool.
Inspect All Lights: Make sure they work. Simple enough. If not then it's probably a bulb (which is very simple to replace) if not then it might be something more complicated
Tranny Fluid: This still applies to you. If you're at 60k then you might wanna consider changing your tranny oil. I'm new to manual transmission maintenance, and I know they don't take as much attention as autos, but I'm pretty sure you should be changing it around this time. Anyways, it's as simple as taking a bolt out, draining the old oil out, and funneling the new oil in
Inspect Idle Speed: Please... look at the odometer and make sure the needle is a little below 1,000 RPMS when the engine is warm. Like around 650-700 rpms
Courtesy Inspection: They just did that for you for free!
Those are the simplest things on the list. The others are doable and get your friend's brother to help you with it! If he has all those tools, I assume he knows how to use them right?

thanks guys and to the mod that changed the thread title, I didn't get owned because i spent no money and found out a few things for free. In fact, they were gonna charge me for the CEL diagnostic but didnt so if anything I came out better than i would have.
