Leaking Trunk.....any suggestions on how to fix this?

Lately, the leak in my trunk has made me take out the speakers and carpet. I couldn't figure out where it was coming from since it needed to rain pretty heavily for anything to happen, and I think when I first started seeing a leak, it had not rusted yet....well....it's rusted now....and the leak has gotten progressively worse.

pics

I might need to take another pic, there is a small nic in the metal lip that secures the weather stripping, a half *** fix from when my car got hit a while back.....I even brought it to the dealer that time.....bastids....

definately need to take some better photos... my first Q would be: have you replaced the weather seal?

have you removed the weather seal to see what condition the lip is in? is it all rusted as well?

where, exactly is the rusted area? center? at the tail-lights? where?

when I said metal ring, I meant lip, original post edited for clarity.

The lip has the nic in it, it also has a slight fold/bump in it from where I got hit in '03. I I just have to fix the nic, ok, but getting the rust from between the two pieces of sheet metal is going to be a pita.

I see that alot in cars that have had rear damage. Even a slight bump could tweak the sheetmetal enought to cause the leakage problem.
I'd repalce the seal first and then you might have to add some black RTV in ceritan areas to complete the seal.

Most trunk leaks come from the tail lights. Pull them out and make sure the black sealing gunk is still in place, add some more and reinstall the tails.

have you had it back to the body shop that did the work?

a lifetime guarantee usually is given with collision repairs.

also, if you got it fixed through an insurance claim, check with your insurance company. they may be able to assist you in compelling the body shop to re-fix it.

Yea a sealant will keep that seal down and in contact with the trunk when you close it. I recently got a leak in my trunk and had to stretch out the seal a bit to reach around the bottom section, and RTV it in one spot on the bottom left where it turns. All in all, its fixed after alot of water testing.

Trunk leaks really really bother me because the minute you get a nice day, your windows fog up and car starts smelling like mildew. Really gross and bad for your health

you sure the smell isn't just because you're in North Jersey?
