OSCAI - Plumbers' CAI :)

Just built an OSCAI with a 2' pvc pipe and 2 elbows with a metal mesh at the end to trap dirt.

I got an increase in low end torque, especially up to 2000 rpm, and I think it got smoother at idle (in D).

I didn't want it to be exposed to water, so it sits over the splash shield.

I couldn't find a black pipe, but this one doesn't look so bad.

Total cost: $5

I see coolant on your radiator fan and under the fill cap. Hope you accidentally spilled some while doing some maintenance.

Even though OSCAI is defined in the stickies, it might be best to define it for the n00bs before they ask.....

Nice clean job. I did something almost like this but decided to ditch the lower part(the bottom part of the snorkel is blocked off) I just thought that if I were to use both as ram air top and bottom, where they meet would slow down the air. Now that Im done my setup, Im gonna try it again with the lower piece attached also. Great idea on the screen.

well technically he shouldnt get killed as he wants a write up on how to do it with the pvc pipe not the rubber hose.... and tyler5619 its as easy as the pics look. he might need to tell u the length (if he cut the 2' pipe) and that should be it. the pics say it all. put the piping together (screwed like his or use pvc cement) and screw it to the snorkel opening as shown. put a strainer like he did or use the mesh used to make screens (also sold at HD).

edit: shopping list should be: 2"x24" pvc pipe, two 45 degree elbows, some sort of mesh for end, screws.

Is this better than OEM? Doesn't most of the air enter through the front air collection scoop anyway?

Also, for what it's worth, shouldn't the opening be aimed forward to benefit from any potential ram effect?

I went to " HD" and bought a 2' pvc pipe, a 45 degree elbow, and 90 degree elbow. The the metal screen was bought at lowes (it's the biggest one they have for the sink).

I used small screws with drilling ends and also used a drill to make holes in the elbow for the screen (the screen is delicate and you don't want to drill holes with screws through it).

I don't remember what lenght I cut the pipe, but I think it was less then 2 feet long. Just measure from the snorkel opening to the splash screen. The 90 degree elbow was attached at the end.

I was thinking about the same thing, but I decided to go with this setup and not the one in the link obove because my car is lowered and I didn't want any water (rain or splashes from the ground) to enter the air intake.

The end of the pipe is hidden over the splash guard, thus it's not exposed to water as much as the one in the link above which sticks out from the splash guard at the bottom of the car.

The reason I turned the elbow to the back and not the front is because there's not much air entering from the front at that spot due to the structure of the splash guard.

I figured out it will get much more air if turned back toward the open space near the transmission. I think when you drive, some air enters the engine bay through the bottom just like it enters through an open window.

I'm not claiming that my setup is the most efficient and I'm open for advices on how to get more air into the pipe without exposing the intake to water.

if water gets in a piece of pvc pipe, hows that gonna hurt it. how is water gonna make it all the way up that pipe, and at that if it did theres no way it would be enough to hurt anything, unless you plan on drive through a deep creek

Water can get sucked in just like air.
If you make a search you will see that some people got their engines hydrolocked through their CAI.
Also, water might pass through the air filter.
