Shift Lights

OK, after blipping the rev limiter for the umptenth time because I cannot hear the motor (I am partially deaf, seriously, and learned to shift by ear), its time for a shift light. Who would have thought in a 4door sedan I would need one. The other vehicles I have owned were winey and loud enough that I did not have a problem, and on my motorcycle it easy to feel and see.

For those that have them, which brand, and how obtrusive is it? Meaning I would like the inside to remain as stock as possible and would not like to have a huge cannon like object on the dash. Also can you get a pill that is close to 6500 or so? Can the cannon be disassembled so just the small light sits somewhere or does the cannon piece have something to do with the light projection?

Any opinions based on experience would be helpful

Thanks!

Autometer ProShift Lite

I have it in my glove box. Whenever I need it, I just reach over pop the latch and I'm ready to go. Check the sticky for pictures on which wire you need to tap.

The only problem is that it doesn't light soon enough. I put in the 6400 rpm pill and according to my OBD it turns on around 6000 rpms. I put in my 6600 rpm pill and it's right after I bounce the rev limiter at 6438 rpms(6700-6800 on the tach!). So the only thing I can do is wait a second or two before I shift with the 6400 pill. They make a LED conversion that supposedly shortens the time it takes for the light to trigger, but I don't know if it will make enough difference for me to be able to use the 6600 pill.

I would recommend this shift light, but do to the limited 200 rpm pill increments, you might want to try a tach/shift light combo with a "dial-in" adjustable shift light.

All in all, the shift light makes it possible for you to SQUEEZE every last ounce of power out of your Maxima. I truely think this has helped me be able to safely and more consistently shift while keeping my eyes on the road. No doubt it's worth the money and will be priceless at the track, since you can't hear $HIT over the RICED exhaust on the $hitvic next to you.

I have a shift light that is adjustable in 100rpm increments from 500 to 12,000rpms(no pills) and is only 1"dia x 3" long.

Pictures of it installed are on www.greghome.com...Click on to "Random Musing"..."NorEast Max Meet".."MegaMax2". The center set of pictures show it on the steering column. I'd set the link but Greg's sit has alot of "%" signs in the path the mess the web link.

Gee the sticky, what a novel idea, why did I not think of that? Thanks for the info!

I looked at it and it seems small enough and not intrusive at all. It looks really good with the dark dash, which I don't have.Does it capture your attention when "racing". Meaning you are not paying attention at all to the dash, rather what is going on in front of you? Not to expensive at all either!

I never said I didn't like it, but it does look a bit ricey.

You can use it to tell you when to manually shift, but people will laugh at you for having one on an auto.

I thought maybe the tranny could cop a clue from it and learn how to shift better

6 high brightness LEDs will get your attention.

Wow, that is nice. I went to his website and liked what I saw. I am going to order one and try and split into two pieces. Put the guts one place and the lamp assembly in another, that way it will be smaller and less noticable. I have to wait for his reply on how its built.

Thanks for pointing me in this direction, his is very dynamic and home grown. Looks sweet on his video too!
