What is this part?

So, when I was installing my intake spacers, my buddy recommended that I take this part off since the hoses wouldn't connect anywhere. So I removed it and drove around without it for a while. Then I saw how it was installed on someone else's and put it back on at the NWP meet. The intake was alot louder with this part removed. It didn't seem to affect driveability of the car when it was removed, though. What is it and what does it too? Can I just take it off again without causing long term damage? I liked how the intake sounded without it.

I think its a carbon canister/vac canister. It doesn't matter if you use it or not. Just tee those vac lines together.

It's the vacuum cannister for the VAIS. With it removed, your VAIS will stay open by default. It closes (by vacuum sensor to the left) at around 2500rpm.

so does it cause any long term detriment? (to your knowledge)

so with it unpluged the VIAS will stay open meaning more power all through the band instead of above a certain RPM right? if that's the case then I will unplug mine so i can have that power all the time.

you will have more at the top end but less at low end

the VIAS was designed the way it is for a reason....

My guess would be that you would loose a little down low but not gain alot up top with the vias still in there.... I think thats why people remove it because so much to be gained up top with more space there but you loose a little in the lower rpms.

I believe you'll lose some power on the low end.

Some folks remove it and block it off.

I believe the canister works as a accumulator the allow the VIAS to open/close smoother. Not just slam open

Sorry for resurecting an semi-old thread, but I ran across this. Was wondering if I'll get a CEL from removing the canister and sensor?

To answer the original question, removing that vacuum canister will hurt low-midrange torque and you will gain absolutely nothing at higher revs.

...assuming the VIAS isn't completely exchanged for a NWP block plate.

This is correct. The canister is used in conjunction with the VIAS butterfly valve. No valve = no need for vacuum. You can remove that and the sensor if you want to clean up your upper IM area.
