Tap the starter with something while someone turns it over.

May be the solonoid.

You say fairly new battery, but have you checked to see whether or not it's currently holding a charge?

Terminals are good as in tight, completely corrosion free?

Check the connections to the starter, and if those are good and your battery is charged, try jumping the starter manually.

And the battery's charge? Have you even tried jump starting it?

1.Do you have a battery/electrical system tester?
2.What is a fairly new battery?
3.Measure battery voltage with a Volt ohm meter...
4.Is this a maintenance free battery?

If your car was running b4 this battery swap, I would definitely point all my attention to that fairly new battery! Maybe you just need to charge it for 24 hrs!

Auto or manual? year? Do your lights go dim when you turn the key into START? If it is auto - put it in N and try again.

Anyway, sounds like starter motor. If you open your hood and ask someone to turn key to ON while listening for sounds below air filter and you hear loud click - it is definetly starter motor.

Bad KC... Newer starters these days cannot take that tapping. You will break the magnets. Better off to check the battery first, then take the starter off and have it checked. In my opinion though if the battery is good for sure and it will not even turn over... Bad starter

Oh, you haven't been around long enough then - people get all kind of things like inhibitor switch, relay, bad contacts. Bad starter is the most common one though. Your tapping must be very hard too .
