Cost of Clutch Master Cylinder

Hey guys,

I drive a 2000 Maxima SE 5spd and I have a problem with my clutch. I brought it to a shop and they said that the clutch master cylinder is bad. They quoted my $373.XX parts and labor. I was wondering if that's a good price or what. I was thinking I can drop the price by ordering the part myself, but I'm not sure how much of that cost is the actual part. I would do the work myself but I am in college and don't have the tools down here.

I was also wondering if it's bad to wait to get cv axles replaced. Like I said, I'm down at college and the same shop quoted me $200 each side for the cv axles. I don't drive too much down here and it's a 1200 mile trip back home which would be in May. I was hoping it's okay to wait to get back home so I can do the job myself.

I talked to the shop again and they quoted the part as $199.98. I just looked at courtesynissan.com and searched the part. The cost was $18.16. Did I look at the wrong part? Or what is the problem

The clutch master should be about $40 at any random parts store. The slave is about $30. Changing the master is certainly no cake walk, but it's no $400 job either. Axles should be no more than $100/side at the parts store. It really depends on the current condition of your axles, whether or not you should wait to change them. If the CV boots are busted and it's slinging grease and rattling all the time, then it's probably better not to wait.

Call up dave b at southpoint nissan. I got quoted about a month ago and the master and slave cylinder were about $40 a piece, iirc.

Thanks for your input guys, I just went ahead and got the job done. I wish I could do it myself, but I don't have the tools or the time. I would have ordered the parts myself but I always have a feeling that the shop will cut corners if I don't buy their part, but they also insure it and I hope to get a AAA discount.

It depends on what you want to do I'd say. Either build it yourself and get the new parts or buy the used parts and save a few dimes.

I would advice all you youngsters to tool up and try to do your own maintenance, the savings are huge along with the gratification....

Honestly, I do have the tools. Passed down from my Grandfather, but at the time they are about 1200 miles north of me in CT, while I'm in AL. I have done the rest of the work myself and would have for this, regardless of my experience, but unfortunately, I'm in an apartment right now with no room for anymore tools than my basic tool set.

Ok, I have a clutch problem with my 2000 max 5 speed as well. The clutch feels as if its slipping but ONLY after its being running for a while, If I let it cool down it runs like a champ and pulls hard as normal. After about 30-45 mins. it wont pull to save its life. I've already got alot of money into the trans seeing as how I've replaced the slave and master cylinder twice once about a year ago before a deployment to Iraq and once after due to loss of pedal pressure. Its been about two weeks ago since I replaced the slave/master, the shop tried to adjust the pedal but the pedal only got hard and the slipping got worse. Their is no free play at all and it pretty hard. I have a stage 1 clutch but would like to find out for sure whats wrong. Any help would appreciated, you can contact me at nancead@gmail with comments. Thanks for your time.

Honestly, I would use eBay for any type of cosmetics or lighting or anything like that. But if you're looking for engine or mechanical parts required to run the car, I'd suggest a known source. That's just my two cents.

I saw this smiley and just wanted to use it.

That's pretty much all that's needed besides a set of stands and a floor jack. Bleed bottle can be anything you throw out (soft drink container).
There's really nothing to complicated and if your apt is anti-car maintenance go to a vacant business lot or a friends house... anyhow I hate giving away hard earned money to half *** technicians as it is....Good luck.
