Got Slicks Couple of Questions

Hello Everyone,

Got some M/T Slicks and I'm wondering at what PSI and at what RPM should I launch at to get my 60' down. Size is 24.5/8/15. My Mods are I,Y,E, 00 VI, Exedy Stg 1, and Fidanza FW. Last time I went to the track I ran them twice before 1 of them went flat and had to swith back to stock. My times were horrible best with slicks was 14.9 with a 2.2 best with stock was 14.8. with a 2.3.

Thanks for any help in advance.

No one can tell you how to launch man. You've just got to test things out for yourself. Do it methodically. Choose an RPM, test it. Then go up like 500rpm, test that, 500 more, test that, etc. Some guys like to launch at 4000rpm some like to launch at 7000.

Neal's right man.....

but i'll try to at least get you started somewhere. i have the exact same size slick. when i would use them and not spray my nitrous i found that i needed the psi roughly about high teens or 20. the engine itself can't really over power the "grippyness" of the slicks. dropping the clutch doesn't really give good results unless your make tons of power. a quick slip of the clutch from 4500-5500 will get you a decent 60'.

nitrous will help alot with that 60'

good luck and practice different things! find what works best for your setup.

Thanks for you help guys. I also noticed that my mph dropped significantly from 94/95 to 90/91 going from stock to slicks. I was running the slicks at about 18 psi will tire pressure affect the speed at the end of the quarter mile that much?

Maybe - but compare the circumference (distance around) each tire. Chances are the slick is smaller than your street tires, so your effective gear ratio is lower. For a given gear and engine RPM, your MPH is less.

Lower gears often help the ET, and that's the important thing at the drag strip - who gets there first !!

Slicks are best run at lower pressures, depending on tire mfg and type. I race with my M&H Racemaster slicks set at 11-12 psi, and MPH drops a little bit.

yeah that's what i was saying. your engine how it is can't really over power the slicks. so its ok to run higher pressure in the slicks just running n/a. now if you turbo or spray that's when you need to start letting the pressure out because at that time you will start to overpower the slicks.

I am in disagreement about the trap speeds. I have never noticed any drop in trap speed going from regular tires to DRs to slicks on the same day and I run my slicks at about 11-12psi. My traps are always identical when I make my first run or two on street tires or my DRs to when I switch to my slicks for the rest of the day. Just be methodical with your testing. Write down on each timeslip how you launched, tire pressure, any quick notes about the run (any anomalies or weird things that happened during the run), etc. Analyze this stuff and pretty soon you'll be an old hand at running with slicks and you'll be able to know exactly where to start your tire pressures, how to launch each time, and you'll be running good times consistently right from the moment you bolt the slicks on.
