Hey guys,

I'm pretty sure my car doesn't have the in cabin air filter (I've read that if you do, you get a nice sticker inside your glove box telling you so), but I've also read that you can insert one since the car is made to accept it.

Is there anywhere locally I could get it? NAPA/Advanced Auto/Pepboys? I know the one from Nissan is like 32 bucks + 10 ship (kind of expensive!)

Also is there any way to clean out the ducts without taking the whole dash apart?

 

It does have a cabin filter.

Mine doesnt have sticker either, but i put it on when i changed the filter last summer.

the sticker is an optional. it's like an oil sticker reminder whether you want it on or not

 

well, either way - where's the best place to get one cheap?

 

for our cars, we only have two options, Dealer or NAPA. the cheapest one is NAPA. i bought mine from dave b and $40's something shipped.

 

why did you decide to go napa route instead of dealer if it was cheaper?

That time i bought a lot of stuff from dave b; inner tie roads, outer tie rods, O2 sensors, axle boots, shifter bushing, and cabin filter. i just want get everything in one shot, and beside that, the price is only couple bucks different.

 

i think i need a new one. 02 SE and car was owned by a smoker. depending on how the A/C or heat is running i can smell the smoking smell >

$40 or so is reasonable but the thing is, how hard is the process?

 

very easy.
unscrew a couple of screws(4 on the top, 2 on the bottom), take off the airbag socket(without unpluging it), and the glove box light, then the glove box can get out.
release 2 clips, slide the cover, take out the old filter if there is one, put the new one in, and do the reverse process.

 

Got a phillips head and 20 minutes?

To elaborate - the first two screws are on the bottom of the glovebox; one will be directly above the kick panel, the other through the side panel directly across from the kick panel.

Open the glovebox. Look where the top of the glovebox meets the dash. One the far left and right will be one screw per side. The final two are the two that are holding the glove box door latch arm. Remove those. Slide the glovebox harness clip to the left to remove. Place your right hand on the outside of the glovebox panel, pulling down to the left.

So I took apart my glove box and found the spot where filter goes... no filter in mine

I cleaned out what was there - had some leaves and a lotta dust!

Cheapest price for stock one was 42 from courtesy nissan

I got two of them from ebay for 15 dollars shipped!

Just did mine last week. That's probably 5 years worth of garbage. A lot more crap fell out as I was pulling the filter out. Even after I took the filter out there was a lot of crap still in there. I had to get a vacuum with a long extension to remove the remnants.

 

I bet you, that filter had an odor!

 

its nothing like a fresh OEM air filter.......

 

yeah it is better... activated carbon filter...

you put the two together and they become the size of the oem one.

For 15 bucks instead of 42 it is deff worth it

I think i'm going to tackle this little job soon, I'm guessing that the filter in my car was probably never changed. I also don't have the sticker in my glove box so i don't even know if there is a filter in there at all anyway, so i'm definately going to buy the ebay filter and pull the old one out, if there is one, and put a new one in. if there isn't on i'll clean the area and add one.

I think my cabin filter is due for a replacement. I was hesitant with replacing it (I didn't want to mess around with the airbag), but after reading your descriptions it doesn't seem too difficult. Nice job with the step-by-step instructions. Very helpful

 

Thanks for the write up. I followed the video instructions here: http://www.framfreshbreeze.com/instr.../NISSAN/MAXIMA here when I installed the Purolator C16112C filter. $25.53 from Amazon with a $5 rebate from Purolator.

The Purolator is the 2 filter activated carbon design, and even comes with a spare clip, in case you break off the clip when you remove it. Both filters are labeled with an "up" arrow so you know which way to insert it. I took photos, but with the video, I don' think they add anything to the process.

By the way, the other half approves of the cabin air filter. The car had been smelling a little like a mechanic's shop before I replaced it, and now it just smells clean.

 

It makes no sense at all that Nissan did not use in cabin air filters for certain cars. I just took my car apart and checked and sure enough, no cabin filter in there. The very bad part about it is that the A/C Evaporator was completely covered in dirt and there was even a few leaves in there. Does this explain why my AC is not completely cold? I got a brush and I took some good chunks of dirt off the A/C Evap and I came in and ordered a filter right away.

 

You can spray water in there to wash the coils off as well. Just make sure the drain is not clogged first.
Yes, dirt and debris will reduce efficiency of the coil to cool passing air and/or reduce the volume of air passing.

I just added one to my wifes 00' and I ended up taking everything apart to clean out the evap coils as it was so caked in dirt/grime that it essentially turned into its own little filter over the entire surface.

I got every little bit out, vacuumed then installed a new cabin filter. Also cleaned out the blower fan too (leaves and such) - operates more powerfully and much more quiet.

 

This stuff works good, too.
