how to make fog lights be on without headlights.

ive checked the serches i did find that you need 12 volts for them to turn on. and most people wiere them to the pakring lights or the winshield washer lines. however, all the links with the write ups ive clicked on must have been hella old. therefore, i wana know if any one got a write up link for this?

This is the one I woulda posted. Tapping into the wipers is not only easier but a better mod because you can have the foglights on without any other lights.

Bumping an old thread for input.

So I followed the writeup and now my fogs only come on without the headlights. As soon as I turn the headlights on, the fogs shut off. Tried all settings (high/low beam, parking lights), nothing. Knew I shouldnt have attempted this without a wiring diagram....

BTW, if it helps some, now when the headlights are in the off position (fogs on/hl off), the blue high beam indicator in the cluster is dimly illuminated...

Yessir thats the one I used. Under the fog relay, there wasnt a green/yellow wire. It was green/orange. Maybe thats where I screwed up?

You will need to find the trigger line for the fog lights (it should be green with a yellow stripe) Cut this wire. Tape off the wire leading down with electrical tape so that it doesn't short on anything. Strip back the wire going up into the relay. Now take 3-4 inches of thick insulated wire (at least as thick as the g/y fog light trigger, and 'connect' one end to the g/y stripe fog trigger going into the relay.
double check this. and if u need pics i can send u some tomorrow let me know

I just checked my '96 I30 FSM and it shows the fog lamp relay has a grn/yel wire and a grn/org wire too. Later year 4th gens may have different wiring.

From the pics, it seems that I have to cut the pink wire. As you can see, the colors of the wires are different.

Will be going back at it as soon as it cools off. 90+ deg out there....

here in pa thats illegal to have your foglights turn on w/o headlights. i guess cause people use them instead of their headlights. fogs def arent bright enough to use as headlights, i know some of you use hid fogs but still illegeal here.

Thats interesting because I know some audis use the fog lights as DRLs over here. I did this mod a while ago and I had to figure the diagram out myself because the wiring colors are different up here in Canada where all the cars had DRLs. I remember I didn't touch anything with the wipers though, I tapped just the headlight wires and I just took the fuse out for my DRLs to have just the fogs on.

BTW, I got my fogs to work independantly for the most part. They work with just the low beams and parking lights. High beams, no. But thats fine with me. Reason I went ahead with the mod is so I can run my fogs with my halos. Halos are spliced into the corners. So it still works!

For reference I30 owners, following the writeup, for us, look for a PINK wire, not green/yellow from the fog relay. PINK WIRE FROM THE FOG RELAY!! And everything else stays the same. Cut pink wire and splice that into light green wire of the wiper relay.

Thanks Luke for the big time assist.

Wouldn't it cut out a lot of aggravation if you just got the headlight stalk with fog switch?
