annoying noise.. Axel Bearing

My car is making a constant noise while in gear or out of gear. 5sp obviously. It just started about 2 weeks ago but the noise never stops and does not increase while turning. My brother is a mechanic and took a stethoscope to the axel bearing and said thats my problem.
The whole axel was just replaced within the year. how could it go bad so fast?
Also any idea how much the part costs?
How much labor is involved?
does it require a new half shaft?
Thanks for your help.. its got 153k on it but I want to keep it goin for another year or so.

I have a similar problem, started having an annoying grinding like noise after replacing my drivers side half shaft 18 months ago. It's most noticeable at 30 mph and above. I am not sure if the noise is coming from the half shaft or the wheel bearing. I don't believe the axle (half shaft) contains any bearings are you referring to the wheel bearing?

The wheel bearing is a common problem and it is not at all unusual to have one go bad after 150K miles. A wheel bearing is about $60-$70 and labor to change the bearing is $200-$300. You may also need a wheel alignment after the halfshaft or wheel bearing is changed.

Is this only while moving?

So the noise doesn't stop if you clutch in?

Does the noise increase with speed or with RPM?

noise does not stop with clutch in.
It only makes noise while im moving.
It does change some depending on how fast, not rpm's.

Just had one wheel bearing done and this is a completely different sound. on the axel or half shaft there is a larger round thing, thats where my bro said the bearing is. What is this part? It is on both axels and the noise is coming from the longer axel, right in the circular part.. which i was told is a bearing..

What are the pieces from the axel that can cause this?
I am almost positive its not a wheel bearing.

What 'larger round thing'? The rubber weight in the middle of the shaft? Or the carrier bearing that's only on the passenger side axle?

Figure the same, but he says it's 'on both axles', so...

no its the passenger side axel... if i said both axels, i didnt mean to..
What is it like to replace the carrier bearing?
Would i just replace the entire axel?
Not really sure how this work, any help is appreciated. I just know the constant sound is getting to me.

Also my right rear tire locks up when my car sits overnight sometimes.. seized caliper? Ive stopped using my ebrake when I park and it hasn't locked up in a week or so. Each time it locks up I just let it sit and its good by the next day?

First of all, it's axle, not axel.

The bearing itself is on the axle, but I've never heard of one failing or making any noises.

So it hasn't locked up ever since you stopped using the parking brake? It's most likely just a damaged cable, or the caliper itself.
