slow acceleration

had my car serviced for new sparks(NGK's) and 6 new coil packs, no rough idle at all thats taken care of but now what i notice is when accelerating at dead stops its kinda sluggish and i mean that by when i hit the gas it goes to about 1800 rpm stays there and just takes its time getting any higher? and maybe a slight but noticeable vibration when forcing it any higher in the pedal.

can it be a common automatic transmission issue?

any answers i greatly appreciate.

Have you checked for codes? You probably need to replace your knock sensor.

Indeed, check for codes.

If it literally sits at 1800 RPM as you said, while it's accelerating, it's a trans issue.

maybe......would the oxygen sensor cause this? few months ago i got a light on and got the code for a 02 sensor and then it went off and hasnt been on since??? wierd huh....

thats probably it.

Could be MAF? If it's fine till 1800 and then bogs down, but that is usually 2k rpm.

..maybe your misfiring also/still?

Not a chance.

Well, theoretically, if it was showing you as extremely lean or rich and the ECU compensated by dumping a ton of fuel or removing almost all fuel from that bank, it's possible. But it's not likely in the least, and it wouldn't hesitate at a specific RPM like that.

Does the car behave like it's in 3rd gear?

Roll the car backwards slowly, and slide it into Drive. If it SLAMS into gear (like, neck-jerking force), chances are your car is stuck in 3rd.

If this is the case, the transmission might be in limp mode. This happened to me once after locking up the brakes to avoid a collision - afterwards, the car stayed in 3rd gear. I had to turn the car off and back on to restore the other gears.

Even if it's not in limp mode, the tranny might still be stuck in a higher gear, limp mode is just a possible explanation.

yes it does feel like its in a higher gear.........from a dead stop it shifts quickly(and i mean quickly) into 1st and then sluggish there on...........i just had 2 guys check on it and there baffled lol .

Shifting problems can also be caused by a bad TPS or a TPS that needs to be adjusted.

And what do you mean it shifts quickly to 1st from a stop? Its supposed to be in 1st at a stop.

well, my car starts off at 2nd gear from a stop... well, i don't make a complete stop anyway, so that might be why..

I had the exact same problem when my TPS wasnt calibrated properly. IIRC it read ~250 ohms at idle and it would shift to 2nd as soon as I gave it gas. I adjusted the TPS to read ~500 ohms at idle and shifting was back to normal. Hopefully that's your problem because it's a simple fix.

Get the FSM for you car using pmohr's signature in this thread (post #3) and follow the instructions for the TPS adjustment in the EC section under Basic Inspection. You'll need an ohm meter.

FAIL-SAFE
The TCM has an electronic Fail-Safe (limp home mode). This allows the vehicle to be driven even if a major electrical input/output device circuit is damaged.
Under Fail-Safe, the vehicle always runs in third gear, even with a shift lever position of “1”, “2” or “D”. The
customer may complain of sluggish or poor acceleration.
When the ignition key is turned “ON” following Fail-Safe operation, O/D OFF indicator lamp blinks for about
8 seconds. (For “TCM SELF-DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE (No Tools)”, refer to AT-50.)
Fail-Safe may occur without electrical circuit damage if the vehicle is driven under extreme conditions (such as excessive wheel spin followed by sudden braking).

To recover normal shift pattern, turn the ignition key OFF” for 5 seconds, then “ON”.
The blinking of the O/D OFF indicator lamp for about 8 seconds will appear only once and be cleared.
