How do you drain the fuel tank?

Might be a stupid question but how do you drain the fuel tank? I tried syphon but the hose stops before making it to the tank, I even tried some very small 1/4 inch hose nad it never makes to to the tank. Can I just disconnect fuel line from filter, turn the car on and run a line into a can? will the fuel pump turn on or does something need jumped somewhere?

pop out the fuel pump and siphon directly from there.

connect a hose to the outlet side of the fuel filter and put the other end in a bucket and turn on the ignition and let the fuel pump drain your tank!

gotta keep the pump running tho. additionally i have heard that running a fuel pump dry (draining the tank or otherwise) is bad for it.

Wrecked and I am junking it and want that 1/2 tank of gas. Fuel pump only stays on for about ten seconds with motor off.

yeah.. the ECU shuts off the fuel pump after a few seconds when it's not running.

Last time I had to drain the tank, I just took at 12V jump starter battery and hooked the pump to +12V so it ran all the time. then disconnect the incoming line from the fuel filter and run it to a gas can.

ummm not exactly...
the gas actually cools the pump motor of the pump. you run it that low it'll over heat or cause damage to the pump.

gas tanks have baffles/sumps in them so they don't pump air when you make a turn.
it's ok to run a tank below 1/4 if you know the gas in the tank is clean.

Dan, how is it possible i've been running fine for years with the breather pipe coming out of the gas tank disconnected? I just noticed last night. Maybe that was the reason why I failed emissions. Does it basically just go to the carbon canister....and not critical? Oh and, any pending damage if I left it like that?

well it's not critical per se...BUT it won't pass emissions. you're just letting the fumes go out to the air which is no good...i should pass the carbon caniser.

but your car should run normally.
