Interior Overhaul process thread(2.0) - Custom Black/tan interior, 350z seats, +more

[NOTE 6-5-11] - So, it has been over 2 years since I have done this. The Duplicolor vinyl spray is holding up wonderfully. I need to touch up a few spots on the door panels where I didn't get a full 2-3 coats on. Other than that it looks wonderful.

So if anyone plans to use this then they should expect it to hold up assuming they prep the surfaces well.
---

I am doing a two-tone interior and I will be updating this thread over the next few days.

My original interior was the brown/beige from Nissan. You guys know it is NOT the best looking interior so here is my attempt to make it nice.

The Project:

2-tone Black and Beige
Black carpet
Black plastics on the lower half of the interior
Paint vinyl parts of interior black

To paint the vinyl, I used Duplicolor flat black vinyl spray dye. It is very nice, it has held up well over the last month on my door panels.
The key thing IMO is to prep the surface properly. I used a degreaser and rubbing alcohol to clean the vinyl, on the plastics on the door panel, I sanded and cleaned.

I removed the carpet and dash today/yday. The rain is halting me from painting the dash today.

For the carpet, I bought ACC black carpet. I plan to add some sound deadening to quiet up the interior. Pics to come as I go along

That is how the door panels look and how the over all look of the interior will be.

I like this idea. Door panels look good. No chrome inner door handles?

It would fit very well, considering you have a GLE and the black portion of the two-tone would match with the black outer part of the chrome door handles (not like putting them on a purely tan interior)

It sounded ugly when I read the first post, but it actually looks pretty good. My brother used the same Duplicolor stuff to change his tan interior to black in his '74 Plymouth Duster and it has help up well for several months now.

a friend of mine did this sometime ago. He got an almost complete black leather interior from the junkyard and did the 2 tone thing. It looks good on his. I dont have any pictures as of now though.

Now for the floor. I used this in the trunk and now I am putting it on the floor. Ensolite™ MLC from RAAMMAT.

On top of that will go some extra carpet padding I have. And then I will put on the carpet today or tomorrow.

I've been waiting for a post just like this. Your work looks fantastic!! I have a beige interior and I hate it. I guess this is a much cheaper way to change it to black than buying all the parts bit by bit. Thanks man!! :-)

I did buy lower B-pillar, center console, kick plates, and step plates in black. I did not want to paint the plastics since if they get scratched they will show the old color

Good ole carpet padding.

I will add this, if I were doing this EXACTLY like I wanted, I would have removed the OEM tar with dry ice and done my damping. But time will not let me pursue that

***** is huge, gonna do this tomorrow morning.

Keeping the theme going thanks to REDLINEGOODS

It matches pretty well, it will be better once I clean the plastics and apply Lexol Vinylex.

That is all for now, gonna take a break and wait for more paint to get here so I can paint the wheel and some little platics that don't get touched.

Paint is not sticking well to the plastic on the steering wheel FTL. But since it doesn't get scratched, it will do for now. I will prob buy a 97se wheel down the road. But for now I can live with it.

That is all for today. Tomorrow carpet gets cut, it will likely take a while . My pops is gonna clean the ac ducts/vents so I dont have dust anymore. Might get the dash in later in the evening but prob not.

Props for originallity, but not feeling the tan/black combo with a white car.
Maybe Black/grey but the tan is just so loud. Also not feeling the wood trimmed switches. They should either be black or tan also to flow together. Too many colors making it look too busy.
To me, the black and tan color combo would look good on either a black car or gold.
But to each their own.As long as you like it. Dash came out well.

where did you get your black carpet?

I'd really like to switch my grey oem stained carpet to a black one. Happen to have any pics?

Sorry to thread jack.

To the OP what color seats are you gonna have in this two tone interior? Custom covers with both colors? That redline armrest looks really nice.
