Sunroof Disaster!....during evening rush hour and in rain.

Well, driving down the expressway(93 South) this evening in rush hour traffic and in moderate rain and out of nowhere I hear, 'Ping!' My first thought was the windshield was struck by a small rock until several minutes later broken bits of glass started falling down and drops of water (I had the sliding sun shade open) which i immediately closed. The wind kept blowing off the remaining glass pieces and by the time I took the next exit (traffic was heavy) a drop of water was forming on the center dome light. I pulled into a gas station to inspect the damage, bought some duct tape and nylon trash bags and administered some 'first aid'. Made home driving 40 mph coz of the wind and will call insurance company first thing tomorrow morning. (Took lots of pictures but posting rules say can't post attachments.)

*Weather forecast calls for more rain tomorrrow, I'm screwed!

Damn that sucks dude, 93 south was harsh, especially between exit 31-34 because they are trying to fix the first 3 lanes, anyways, you can post pictures using photobucket. Thats what I do. Unless you don't have photobucket, PM me and I will post it up for you.

Any clue what happened? Did something from the road construction fall on it? Or did it just break under its own weight? Very sorry to hear that,I know that will be expensive. If your not under warranty, look for one at junkyard,I would say sunroof would have survived most non rollover wrecks.Good luck.maxman7

Sorry to hear that. How did the interior survive, including you window shade? Was it hailing or just a bad angle on a higway rock?

Photobuck is my choice. Create an account upload you pics there and then copy them image link and paste. Pretty easy.

Drove down 93 last weekend and the road construction around Medford is nasty. Lots of cars bottoming out and would not want to hit those bumps on a bike.

My first car was a 1985 maxima. I was cruising down I-65 toward Nashville tn when the radio station i was listening to broadcast a tornado alert. Winds picked up and i look to the right and there was the tornado. Then pshoooo there goes the sunroof. It was sucked right off the car. Sought shelter under an overpass. Soon after came the duct tape and plastic bags from a truck stop when it started raining. Its a ****y feeling i know too well.

Do you have the skyview or the sunroof? There was a recall on the skyviews because they were exploding (I had mine replaced) But I don't think it affected the 06 but worth checking out...

jsmithsole, i got the regular sunroof, it has the tempered tinted glass which usually shatters into small fragments instead of sharp shards when broken, making it less likely to cause severe injury and deep lacerations. For its safety and strength, tempered glass is used in a variety of demanding applications, like vehicle windows, glass doors and tables, as a component of bulletproof glass, for diving masks, and various types of plates and cookware. The glass is most susceptible to breakage due to damage to the edge of the glass where the tensile stress is the greatest, but shattering can also occur in the event of a hard impact in the middle of the glass pane or if the impact is concentrated (for example, striking the glass with a point). Using tempered glass can pose a security risk in some situations due to the tendency of the glass to shatter completely upon hard impact rather than leaving shards in the window frame.

Updates; gladly i got the insurance company taking care of this, an auto glass company is going to install a brand new glass which has being ordered from Nissan, seems like none of the local nissan delearships have the sunroof in stock, should be arriving by Monday by UPS. Pics coming up shortly.

This section of 93 South is being resurfaced so DPW usually scrap off the top old layer but usually leave small rocks which fly off the cars driving in front of you. I'm sure it wouldn't have affected the front windshield coz its laminated, the sunroof glass is tempered which shatters to small pieces. I'm got 23, 516 miles on this Max, but its older than 3 years.

Interior so far looks good, didn't rain much yesterday but i did notice a drop of water forming on the passenger side A-pillar (where the top headliner meets the pillar) Went to Home Depot and got the biggest grey roll of duct tape and just patched the whole area completely which btw matches with the K11 smoke color. It wasn't hailing, this was just a case of a highway rock striking the wrong place. Can't wait for the installation on Monday which the auto glass company said might be an 4-6 hr job coz they have to take out the inside headliner, clean all the pieces of glass from the sunroof mechanism and tracks and put fresh grease.

Same thing happened to me yesterday in my 05. I was driving down the hwy. Nobody around my sunroof just spontaneously shattered for no reason.
