I upgraded my motor mounts to poly thinking it would resolve a clunking noise I've been hearing. It definitely has not resolved the noise, so I've deduced that these mounts are still good.

They are off my car, 2000 GXE automatic. They're the electronic ones that stiffen/soften based on throttle. Still very firm and NO rips/cracks in the rubber.

I thought the GXE's didn't have these? Was this an available add-on option? And where do these plug in/what controls them?

I have a GXE that I believe does not have these, and may be interested.

There must be good reason that Nissan made both these and the regular ones. There must be some palpable difference.

 

Well I have a GXE and definitely had them - I was surprised as well.

I don't think it was an option, it either was or wasn't. They're controlled by the ECU and plug in right under the air snorkel, to the right of the o2 sensor plugs. The plugs are maroon in color - two of them, very hard to miss.

 

What has changed going from the OEM to the polys?

 

Wheel hop reduced, less jerk during shifts, an increase in cabin vibration during startup & idle.

did you have to buy a manual front mount so the poly insert would work ?

 

Yes, they have to be manual fronts. These (electronic ones) have a diameter of 4". The poly bushings only come in 3.5", which is the size of the manual mounts.

 

I have a 95 Max and my brother said I need the rear engine monts. He drove it this past weekend and found that when it shifts it has a certain knock to it. He thinks its the motor mounts. Is this something I can do myself with limited mechanicle experience? If so does anyone have any instructions?

 

How limited is your experience? Where are you located?

 

I have done some work like cleaned out my egr, alternators, waterpumps and things like that. I'm more of the kind of person you tell me what is wrong and I can fix it but figuring it out I don't have much experience for that level.

Then changing the motor mounts should be pretty easy for you. 4 bolts hold the subframe to the car, and each mount has a single bolt in it connecting to the engine.

As far as diagnostic - easiest way to tell is to put your ebrake on and put the car in gear while Holding the brake pedal down. Rev the engine. If the engine lifts up a lot out of the engine bay, then your mounts are likely shot.

Search around and you'll find pics and a how-to, and other ways of diagnosing mounts.

Thanks a bunch did that check and it looks like they are shot. Also found out that my Strut bar is crimping my throtle cables. Need to take care of that too.
