For about the last 4 months my car has made a funny sound only when I turned right. It sounded like "wum-wum-wum" At first I thought it was my tires, but in September I put back on my 15" factory rims, and the sound was still there. I thought about it, and it can only be the wheel bearing.

Well, I decided to change my wheel bearing myself, and create a little step by step guide for anyone to follow. I took over 145 pics, and posted 62 pics on 5 pages.(have a look: www.motorvate.ca)

Here is a picture of the bad wheel bearing race:



You can clearly see the "pit" in the race. After I changed it, the car seemed different. Most of what I thought was "road/tire" noise was gone. It was the wheel bearing, and when you look at that pit, you can imagine the noise it would make.

This is exactly what I need to do... thanks for the write-up. Now to decide if I attempt it or pay some greasy guy... Where did you get the bearings for $90 each, and do you have the part number offhand? Thanks a lot.

 

I purchased the wheel bearings for $90 at North End Nissan, in Milton. (Kind of by Toronto, Ontario)

If I lived in the US, I would find the closest Nissan dealer to the boarder. I think aour prices are about the same, but with the currency exchange you get 40% ish off. Check it out, it could save you a bundle.

I will have to dig around to get the part number. I will post it tomorrow.

Seal: 40232-33P55
Bearing: 40210-30R01

 

When you say it makes a "wum wum wum" sound when only turning right, is that when you make a really fast right turn ? cause I get that sound when I make a really fast right turn ??

 

With the bad wheel bearing, I would hear the same "wum wum wum" at any speed, as long as I was turning while driving a little quick.

The funny thing is, the frequency of the sound was almost the same at 50 KM/H or 120 KM/H. That does not make sence to me, but that is how it was.

In your case, rotate or change your tires. If the sound is still from the same corner, you might have a bad bearing. If the sound is now from a different corner, it might be your tires.

I believe these stupid fricking things are the root of most of my troubles with weird noises in the back of my car heh. The goraning/whumming noise will occur at any time, especially when the car is cold or it has been sitting around doing nothing for a while, I've found. It's kinda embarassing! I found the speed makes no difference. I think the wheel bearings on my car have been bad since I got it; I remember thinking the car was abnormally loud, and then 2 weeks later that whumming started...back in April lol. well...hopefully not too much damage has been done. I had no clue what it was back then, and it was intermitant with the warm weather and everything, so...wow. hehe.

 

wow i'm amazed the way the race pitted like that. when i did the bearings the metal on the hub was softer than the race on the bearing. on my car the hub was slipping around the bearing. so now the hub was spinning w/o the bearing spinning. it eventually worn down the hub shaft.
