Odd rear rotor wear pattern

These pictures are of my rear passenger rotor. I have also been dealing with a good amount of squeaking, probably coming from this corner.

I was thinking frozen caliper. Anyone have an opinion?

After a liberal application of elbow grease, I was about to rotate the piston with needle nose pliers so I don't think the the caliper is seized. The ring around my rotor is still puzzling. I cleaned up the rotor with a sanding disc, and I'm going to put it back on with freshly greased slides and all. I guess I'll have to wait and see what happens.

Maybe this post would be better suited to the Brakes and Suspension forum?

Really? They aren't really uneven, just look weird. I've never seen a rotor wear like that before.

I am about to do a rotor/pad job on my 98 Max SE and my rotors look worse than that. It looks like the pads are wearing unevenly. It may be caused by the slide pins sticking. If you greased up the pins, it should help; but i suggest getting new pads and bed them into the existing rotor patttern. Save some $$$

Just get new pads and rotors. Never be a cheap &#()%^)_ when it comes to brakes.

Indeed. IMO, the rotor looks just fine, but can't really tell without feeling it.

If the OP is that worried about it, just get it turned (assuming it's within spec).

I had this happen to me and ended up having to replace two calipers, the front driver and rear passenger. If you're new pads start wearing too quick, you'll probably want to do the same. I noticed that on the good calipers, the piston is easy to turn, and on the bad ones it's extremely hard. Don't get too worried about it, but keep an eye on it.

I decided to post a follow up to this thread after replacing the caliper today, because no one could tell me the cause of my problem at the time.

I finally had time to put on the Pro-Stop caliper from Pep Boys today and I'm really glad I did. I came home from work and changed my clothes, being sure to stop at the refrigerator first for some malty motivation. When I got out to my car and got it in the air, I noticed the wheel was still warm as I removed it. "Odd" I thought. I went to the other side and sure enough, that wheel was cool. It was obvious to me at this point. The cause of my strange wear pattern was a sticking piston. It should have been more apparent by how difficult it was to turn in the piston months ago, however I have no prior experiecne with rear disc brakes. I'm definitely going to do the other side now, and maybe even the fronts.

Just keep your eyes open for strange looking patterns on your rotors, as they can be a great indication of problems with your brakes. This also proves that just because rotors are relatively smooth, that does not mean your calipers are functioning correctly.

I had the same problem I replaced both calipers on the rear. Bought kit from car quest it came with calipers, mounting brakets, caliper pins and stainless steel slides for brake pads. There was a core charge on parts the cost was $ 250.00 not including rotors any ways I have not had problem since.

i know u found and fixed your prob already. the ring that your seeing is normal it is just where the pad does not go all the way to the edge of the rotor. if the pad went to or past the edge you would see a similar pattern on the pad where the rotor is not wearing it all the way out to the edge.

Do you see where one part of the rotor is shinier than the other? That shinier ring was blue-ish when I replaced my caliper a couple days ago. The blue was from intense heat of the brakes sticking. The rotor probably needs replaced now, but one step at a time (I noticed when I was roughing it up that that section is noticible softer than the rest of the rotor). Also, if it's normal, why does it not occour at any of the other coners?

If you can imagine looking at the brakes from the front of the car, I think what was happening was that the piston was getting stuck in the "out" position on the lower side, keeping it from retracting. From the small amount of play in the guide pins, this was causing the caliper to rotate slightly, putting uneven force on the outer pad at the bottom side.

Don't be mean. I did search, and that's why I posted the original thread. There are a lot of threads about the rear calipers as that is a common problem. None that I read included pictures or talked about the ring that I had experienced. I just wanted to include some pictures to make diagnosing the problem easier for someone else.

I think Shift_knob was mistaken about what part of the rotor I was talking about, so I wanted to make it clear for everyone. That's all. Have a pleasant Saturday.

Our cars are all pretty much in the category of "old", If you have the money..Go out and buy a new of calipers, rotors and pads.I did...made a world of difference.
Cost about $350 and a weekend to do but feeling safe is def worth the extra cash and some time on the car.
