Higher RPM Revs during Downhill slopes?

I noticed when I'm going downhill, without foot on the gas, only light brakes, maintaining 45-55mph. the RPM steadily increases from 2..2.5...and as high as 3k rpm while going downhill at 50mph.

Is this normal with the 2007 Maxima CVT transmission, or is there something wrong with my pwoertrain...?

When the car's back on flat surface, rpm would return to normal. (2k rpm)

Yes, it is normal...saving the brakes. Slightly touch your accelerator pedal and you will see the trans disengage.

hmmm.. now that you mention it, the higher rpm only kicks in at steeper slopes... because of the downward momentum.

thank you.

yeah its kinda like a manual transmission in a way. it downshifts for you.

You could also switch to manual mode, and push it up to the 6th possition to coast without needing to tap the gas pedal, and wouldn't slow you down like a downshift...

At least that's my theory, I don't have too many steep down hills I can cruze on at the speeds you're talking about. Give it a shot, shout out if I'm wrong.
