engine may be shot or bad crank pulley
engine may be shot or bad crank pulley
well i was going on a small road trip and all was going well until the car starting making a bad knocking noise. I pulled the car over and looked under the hood and the crank pulley looked like it was was out of wack. I trailered it home and pulled both belts off and the pulley def moves a lot in and out. I wasnt able to get the pulley bolt off so i am having some one look at it tomm. I dont know if the pulley would make that noise or if i have a rod knock. I guess we'll know soon enough. If i do need a block . wheres a good place to buy an engine online. I live in Louisville , Ky
would a bad crank pulley make a loud knocking sound? where is the best place to buy a crank pulley ? I dont want a lightweight one or any smaller pulley. I just want an OEM style pulley
Should we assume that you've already checked the obvious, and it's not hitting the timing cover or anything else?
Have you tried moving it back and forth by hand to see if it makes noises?
Classifieds, junkyard, wherever.
bad news. metal shavings in oil and looks like may be a bad bottom end. i have looked on car-parts.com and found an engine for around 750.00. I plan on selling the car and wonder how much i could even get for the car as is or if swapping the engine and then selling would be better. 02 max, 108K miles. Auto. Sterling mist. Bone stock
That would be tough IMO. But with it running I think you could get 6. So if engine is only 750, IMO you would profit more just replacing it. Especially if you do the labor yourself....
My bet is you broke your crankshaft.
The pulley on the end of the crank moved in and out about 1/2 inch. the way it broke the pieces were still able to mesh together and turn.
Never heard of this happening to a Max motor. Must have been a flaw in the crank.
My bet is you wouldn't get much in the shape it's in. $2500 to $3000 if you are lucky.
If the rest of the car is in good shape I'd replace it and keep it. Usually these motors are pretty bulletproof.
Sorry for the problem.
I had Volkswagen back in the day and that's what happened. The car still ran for awhile (20 miles) until the bearings finally went.

i am still up in the air on what i want to do, i am still really pissed and would rather just drive the car off a cliff and watch it burn but no money in my pocket going that route. I wonder if i change the engine if its better to take the engine from the top or drop it through the bottom

If you do drive it off of a cliff, make sure you get it on tape.
You have to disconnect the tranny from the engine on these.
A little more work than some cars when you have to pull the engine. Either way you choose, good luck. I haven't seen an engine go out that early that wasn't boosted and wasn't due to oil consumption.

You will need an impact wrench to remove the pulley. To get it in there you probably will need to remove the radiator. A lot of work to go about it that way.
An easy way to remove the pulley without an impact wrench is to use a 1/2" breaker bar with an extension on the ground. Remove the ignition fuse so that the car doesn't turn over. Crank the engine and it should loosen up instantly. If your crank shaft is indeed the problem than this really won't help you. LOL

That is a bit of work, especially removing the radiator for absolutely no reason.
