02 maxima tire problems
Hi,
Thinkign of getting a maxima SE 6sp but during my research on a number of other cars, I found that in the Lexus IS300 forum that the low aspect ratio tires on that car sometimes cause sidewall bubbles when going over potholes/bumps/railroad tracks. Does anyone know of any problems with the SE tires? Is this something to worry about? How do the SE 6speeds tires habdle in bad weather? It is too early to knwo about treadlife, but anyone care to make an early comment? Thanks

if the 02 SE still comes with Bridgestone Potenza RE92's, then forget it. Those tires are horrible when it comes to wet traction. Dry traction is ok, but wet traction borders on dangerous at times if you aren't careful. Tread wear is rated really low also, but I haven't noticed any excessive wear yet... I have 19k miles on my 2k SE with those tires....
2002 SE come with RE92's - unfortunately...No problems here after 17,000 miles and several big pot-holes. If you live in a cold climate where winter road holes and frost heave are concerns, you might think about some snowtires on steel rims..Either 215/55-16 or
205/65-15 will work.

The guys over on Freshalloy.com are saying the same thing about the Potenza RE92s on the Maxima. Terrible on wet pavement and loud road noise. I have a set of Pirreli P6000 Sport Veloce's on my current Maxima and when they were new I loved them. Now that they're down to about 50% tread they have become annoyingly loud with road noise. I'm going crazy. I've always been less than satisfied with my Max in the rain and don't want the same problem in my new one. Any suggestions for an alternative tire. I want good all-around performance. I would sacrifice a little dry traction for wet traction with good ride comfort and low road noise.
Anyone have an opinion on the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S?

Go to www.tirerack.com as they have reader surveys. The RE92 did not rank well. These tires are expensive too. Many be when summer comes I can trade them in (600km on them so far, and I got some Blizzak LM22 235 45 17) for something better.
Potenza RE92's suck!!
I dont know why manufacturers are putting these crap tires on cars. Honda put them on the Prelude as factory tires and they suck!! They are noisy, have Ok dry traction, bad snow and wet traction and wear very fast (treadwear is 160). It's just a ploy to force us to buy new tires after the first year.
Re: Potenza RE92's suck!!
Though buying a different tire from the stock RE92 is certainly a good thing!
The RE92's do severly suck in the rain but they suck in a consistant fasion so you can some fun.
I think there has only been one blow-out reported on this forum.

For all around performance I have had good luck with the Continental Conti-Touring Contact CH95. Much better than the stock 2000SE Toyos.
Not expensive either. At 35psi the tire is very stable while cornering.
