NEED MUFFLER ADVICE...............

MY stock muffler on my 96 has seen better days. Holes in the sides etc.. I want to remove it by unbolting it just behind the rear tire. I was wondering how ricey the maxima sounds with the muffler unbolted there. I assume the round can underneath the car is a resonator of some sort instead of a muffler. How crappy would the car sound i wonder? Also does anyone recommend a performance muffler that's sorta cheap?

i won't tell be able to tell you. i deleted my cat and resonator.. o.O i got them cheapo autozone 3A exhaust. ^_^ and i am trying to figure out why i DO NOT have the bee's in a can sound.. Grr... F***in honda's.. but i don't think it would sound "ricey" if you did that... unless you thought about an axleback

Some red states still allow you to remove the muffler and/or cat converter? WTF?

no states allow you to remove the cat.. it's completely illegal....

if you look under my car, you would think that i have a factory cat..

but it's gutted.. SHHHH!! Don't tell no one

and for those of you who think that your exhaust gets raspy when you gut the cat and delete the resontaor, i find it completely untrue. either you haven't done it, or just giving nonsense... there is no bee's in a can sound. sounds the same

I honestly don't find any sound difference when i cut my muffler off... neither was a sound differece when i took the resonator out, and i definitely don't have any other significant sound difference when i gutted my cat... but i have noticed better high end power..

I agree that not having a muffler would look dumb but my car is strickly a work vehicle now. I hate those freakin coffee can exhaust though! I was just curious as to how much of a difference the stock muffler makes vs. no muffler at all lol..

A gutted cat is worse then having the stock cat.

yeah dude ur car will not soound ricey at all. i deleted my resonator months ago and heard no sound difference. then just 3 days a go my muffler finally rusted through so i cut it off and considered leaving it like that cuz it had a nice low sound to it. it wont sound anything close to a honda.

i even threw on a crappy ebay jdm tyte rice muffler from a 240sx on it and it still sounds good. just go for it.

Creates a lot more turbulence in the exhaust flow due to the large diameter changes inside of the converter. However you could just fit a piece of exhaust pipe inside to make it act as a test pipe to eliminate that problem.

I have been driving without my muffler for about 6 months because mine was getting rusted out too. I have no other exhaust work done to my car and without the muffler my car has a quiet smooth deep sound to it. I just bought a stillen muffler to put on my car, but I bought it mostly for looks because the sound without a muffler was perfect for me.... Its just two bolts to take the muffler off and try it so you have nothing to lose.

I had my stock axle back rust out on me and fall off.
Didn't sound bad at all. Much louder, but not ricey.
Going from that for awhile to a full cat-back made a difference however, its louder and deeper with the cat-back minus the popping noise when shifting. (that happened when I had no muffler or resonator.)

So just do a system. Or an axle back can. It will sound just peachy.
Or look on eBay or craigslist or local junkyard and get a new stock muffler.

For some reason I like the sounds of those fart mufflers, but not just any fart muffler. I like the ones that sound like explosive diarrhea farts

i've been driving around for a week or two without the muffle (it broke off the b pipe). just make sure it will be held up with the mounts. it doesn't sound bad, just louder when accel from 2000-2500, and noticeable on the highway, you might end up liking the sound, although it's ghetto and somewhat ricey.

I like the idea they had to join the pipe to the muffler with flange bolts. Makes it so easy to remove instead of cutting the pipe into. It also has a nice angle and serves as a little turn down instead of blowing exhaust all over your bumper. Ghetto? OH yes!

It sounds like crap. The muffler fell off my old beater 95 max a couple summers ago. It's not very loud(louder than stock though), it's quieter than my other 95 with 3" exhaust, but it just sounds gross from outside the car, at all RPM. Inside the car you don't really notice it that much, strangely. Like I said the 3" exhaust on my other max is louder.

i was thinking of doing the same thing. i have a ricer fart can on my car, i hate the way it looks on the car but i love the way it sounds. it kinda sounds like a stock 350 or G but a tad bit deeper. i was thinking of just custom making a 2.75 straight pipe with an ES tuning muffler combo...

What exactly does a "resonator" do? I would like to open one up and see what it looks like.

i put a dynomayx muffler on mine. when i welded the tip on the muffler so it stuck out the back of the bumper, it was silent. i cut the tip off at the muffler and it sounds really good. its kinda a sleeper sound though. not to loud but it has a little power rumble to it. i think it looks fine without the tip stickin out the back
