What on earth is this on my hub area?

I took off my caliper, pads, bracket, and rotor and this is what I found. What is it? Should it be there?

Should be. I assume you don't have abs?

That's the ABS ring on the d/s.

The metal dust could be a sign of a pending problem. Check your wheel bearings, those shavings could be a bearing self destrucing. Any strange noises coming from the front wheels? Grinding, dry sort of noises?

Well there was a loud grinding, so I replaced the Rotors, pads, torque member, and all the hardware. I took it for a spin and the grinding was still there. So I rechecked all the bolts and two were loose. Retightened, noise gone. And, I have ABS. The ABS light has been on since the day I bought the car. I need to get that checked out now. How do I go about getting that checked?

Check the sensor. IIRC the sensor is a magnetic sensor

yes the sensor is magnetic. If the shavings were magnetic they would be stuck to everything not just the ABS sensor. Clean them off and maybe that will fix the ABS light, not likely...

Well the first step is to pull the codes. Have you done that yet? If not, search and you'll find the procedure.

looks like shavings from a rotor when you drive on worn out pads for too long, clean off the sensor.

Maybe I should do this as well. Make sure it's only the cracked and molested sensor that's bad...

And the light is there to indicate something, it doesn't just come on without an explanation.

Just because there's no CEL doesn't mean the term isn't relevant, as one can pull codes from the TCM as well without the CEL being lit.

I looked at the fsm and found that the ABS light is used for diagnosis just like the CEL or the AT light. Now I just want to know how 6hrs after I edited my post, you still quoted the pre edit version?

yea, i had this on my car after i drove a bad caliper and destroyed the rotor, it's just pieces of metal that get attracted to that because of magnetism. just brush it off and make sure your caliper isn't seized.
