Cassette player in BOSE acting up......

Whenever I start the car, the cassette player starts to keep trying to spitting the tape out except there's no tape. It will go on for as long as 2 minutes then stops. "Tape error" shows up. Although I don't use cassette tapes, the noise's truely annoying. Even when I do put in a tape, it would not take it because it's too busy trying to spit the invisible one out.

Radio and CD work fine. It's a BOSE in a 98 GLE.

Does anyone happen to know what I could do to fix that? Cut a few wires to disable the cassette player?

Thanks........

I actually have the same problem on the 97 SE I got for my gf...I think it even keeps going longer than 2 minutes and I suspect it drained the battery, especially cuz the car is not road worthy right now so it goes for 2 weeks without starting at a time. Batt and alternator are good but I suspect the Blose may be the problem here.

Yep - every day here (though blank tapes and cassette decks to interface with your home stereo are getting harder and harder to find these days).

I put the entire Stern show on 3, 2 hour cassette tapes Mon-Th while I am recording the show on my Stiletto S2. That way my wife can listen to the show (not live, but after it's recorded, of course) in her Murano and I can listen on cassette in my Max if I don't want to move the S2 from its home dock to my car.

I can also archive stuff I want to save on cassette.

I also use the cassette player in both cars for the cassette adapter when I do play the Sirius receiver in the car.

Trouble is, the cassette players eventually wear out because there are so many moving parts. I recently replaced the whole Bose head unit in my Max with one from a Pathfinder - just because the cassette player wasn't working (but my symptoms were a little different from the OP - mine just spit the tape out after going back and forth a couple times after inserting a tape, and then it shut off. My Bose receiver and CD still worked fine)

I still use the cassette player once in a while listening to stuff that's recorded long time ago and I didn't have a chance to covert to CD.

The symptom actually stopped for about 2 months back in January when I kept a tape in it. And it got worse since after I replaced the battery. (it was drained by taillights, bad switch, not the cassette player)

Funny this thread just popped up..

I use the cassette player with my Zune...I know, ghetto. But, like 2/3 times an hour the damn thing will randomly just pop out for no reason. It's EXTREMELY annoying.
