Have our cars been known to throw axles by hitting hard bumps?
I went back up to NYC to visit some friends and I'm telling you, Linden Blvd is one of the worst streets in the world. I'm driving about 45 and all of a sudden BOOM! I bump in the road the size of a speed bump and I didn't hit just one.
I know some damage was done because when I got back here to NC, I'm getting clicking from the front left side under moderate acceleration. I found other issues that I corrected (busted strut mount (FR) and swap bar bushings) which I thought was the problem but I'm still hearing the clicking and it gets pretty loud at times. I can feel the clicks through the floorboard also.
I've never experienced an axle going bad due to driving over terrible roads I have my shop looking at what the issue could be while I'm here at work.

Welcome to the northeast.... drive with caution. My buddy just demolished one of his ball joints on crater sized pot hole.
I do my best to avoid them but if your not paying attention and hit a good one they can do some damage. Especially if your lowered, I'm pretty sure there were discussions about lowered cars blowing axles like there was no tomorrow. I don't think axles can handle load from angle they are positioned at when your vehicle is lowered (like mines and I assume yours is too)

Well, I actually grew up in Brooklyn and lived in the Boston area for years but I'm kinda spoiled now that I live in NC. The roads are pretty even around here. I needed motor mounts anyway so hopefully this is the issue. I'm having them all replaced as we speak.
I live in Toronto and same issue, I am interested to know what is the issue and after I dropped on coilovers, I hit few hard bumps and I hear similar noises on moderate acceleration. I believe I need to change sway bar links but I'll be interested to know what you end up replacing.
I think having a drop (I'm on eibachs) is fine but when you are lower than factory springs i think the more force gets transferred to axles than can be handle. I think.....
So even if you have a modest drop northeastern roads may still do in your axles

After getting the motor mounts in, the guys went over the axle bolts again and it seems they weren't to torque spec. They will loosen after time especially if they were replaced at some point. They were tightened down and now the noise is gone. Now I have a lot more vibration in the steering wheel so I need to figure out what that's all about. The car was still running smooth when I headed back to NC but after having the work done, I'm getting a little more vibration. I know I need rotors and pads soon so I'll just wait until I replaced those then get the tires balanced and rotated again.

You can also check sway bar end links but I don't think that'd be from the pot holes

Oh no, the problem is solved now. I'm getting wheel vibration now so I'm going to have to look into that issue.
so motor mounts and tightening the axel bolts solved your problems or you also ended up doing the swaybar links and bushings at the same time.
I am planning on doing following:
swaybar links
swaybar bushings
motor mounts
driver side wheel bearing
Please advise if I need to do any thing more or less...
Thanks in advance.
