Maxima won't start right in the cold! help!

Well, here in San Antonio it does not get very cold even in the winter. Well, yesterday it dropped into the thirties and I went to start my 1997 GXE and it started, and then died after it idled for a second or two. But if I tap the gas and hold it at about 1500 RPM for a second or two after I start it, it stays running and is perfectly fine from there on. Once the car is warmed up, it starts back-up fine. I just replaced the battery a month ago so I know it's not that and I did a full tune-up ( plugs, fuel filter, air filter, pcv valve, etc.). I also did some work on my fast idle cam because it was out of adjustment (it would surge when I was at a stop with the A/C on and my foot on the break) but after I adjusted it the problem went away. I'm almost certain that it is something in the Idle air control system but I thought I'd pick your brains a little. Could the IAC valve be sticking or something and when I tap the gas I'm un sticking it? Are there any known issues with this? I don't think it a fuel problem or ignition problem because in runs like a champ when it's warmed up and I did not have a problem until it got below 40 degrees. Any input would be greatly appreciated. When I let the car cool back down and then try and start it again, it does teh same thing.
