5.5 Gen Stock Exhaust Issue

How is everyone? I'm located in NY and as you know we got ravaged by a blizzard last week. Well since its cold and I can actually see my exhaust emissions, I noticed that the left pipe of my stock muffler isn't emitting any exhaust. I've noticed no decrease in performance nor do I hear any loud noise as if there is a hole. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Thanks for the quick response Jason. Any idea why this happens?

I think at lower rpm it provides better flow and at higher rpm its less resistive.

Mine does the same thing, there is a valve or flapper of some sort that opens the other side of the exhaust up at higher rpms. Probably a lot of the reason our cars are so quiet at idle.

Sound clip, or

IIRC that looks like the magnaflow 14816 muffler. I always wondered how those would sound on a custom 2.5 exhaust...

The dual-tips are gorgeous. Is that polished aluminum or chrome? It looks like chrome.

I'm gonna call BS on this as well. A lot of members like me have been around long enough to hear all sorts of exhaust setups, none of which sound like a G35. Magnaflows on our cars simply boom and drone more than anything else.

Therefore sound clip to prove me wrong please.

I do like the polished dual tips for appearance, but really love the sound I get from my Vibrant stealth black twin 3" tips ... (just wish I could find a set of nice chrome tips for it)

Ya I can find all kinds that have the 3" outlet but I need at least a 3" inlet opening which would probably wind up with a 3 1/4 to 3 1/5" outlet ... seems like all the chrome tips only over the inlet up to 2 1/2" which is the problem ... I'll just have to keep searching

That's not an issue, the muffler shop will completely chop off your current tips and weld on the new ones. The actual muffler opening to the tips is never more than 2.5".

Yes you are correct the inlet size to the muffler is 2.5" it is the diameter of the oulet tips which is 3" and finding a simple bolt on over the outlet diameter is a problem, but I am sure a muffler shop can fashion something with a rolled lip to slip over the exciting outlet tips

No no what I mean is, yes your tip ending diameter is 3", but the opening from the muffler is less than 3".

As you can see from the pic below

http://www.outperformanceshop.com/Ph...tCode=VIB-1148

See how the tip expands to 3"? That's what I mean, the actual part where the tip attach to the muffler is 99% never bigger than 2.5".

Yes I do see the tips on the picture expanding, but mine are a full 3" diameter coming straight out of the muffler itself, which doesn't mean that they could very well be less of a diameter just inside the muffler itself which I can't see ... something I'll have to check out at my local Budget Muffler shop to see what they can come with.

I've had the Cattman muffler as-is for over 3 years, and the polished aluminum tips are fine. Actually, 10x better than the crappy OEM covers.

But I still prefer the chromed dual-tips in that picture, with the rolled lip. That looks fantastic.

I got my tips at a local muffler shop (Kinney's Mufflers), which are made by Pilot Motorsports. Really nice finish on them, walls are about 1/4" thick.

So Scott, those are tips that you replaced the OEM covers with, or each pipe-tip entirely?

That's a good look. I've always been curious about that, seeing your back-end sig photo for a while, and never having seen an exhaust mod from you other than a test-pipe.

"Pilot Motorsports", huh? Never heard of them, but it's a neat website. Your tips look like this product page:

http://www.pilotautomotive.com/Produ...7711&PCID=1089

...which are only $15/each on amazon (click here). Seems pretty reasonable, compared to the hundreds of dollars Borla wants for tips.

In your photo, I swear it looks like there's lettering etched into the top.

I have that exact magnflow muffler on my 01 AE. here's a soundclip with stock piping, I am going tomorrow to get 2.5 piping because as of this morning my piping above the axle completely rusted through. I like the way it sounds but nothing sounds like the g35's.

It sounds good, and looks even better IMO. not one bit of rasp at all, and almost a resonator delete, deep sound. How much did u pay for yours? Everywhere I have seen that particular muffler, there was a $180+ price tag attached...

Thanks for the info Scott on Pilot Automotive and to you Rochester for the link, those weld on's with the 3" inlet are what I was looking for ... most of the shop that carry off the counter stuff seem to only have the 2.5 inlet ... But those ones on the Pilot site look perfect for what I am looking for.

I bought mine about 1 1/2 ago off eBay and only paid like 120. I look on eBAy now and all the prices are at least 180. Wow they went up.

I believe they removed the covers and welded the new tips on. They are engraved.

I know why it looks so good. It's the Cyclo. Seriously, as one of a very few owners and loyal users, the Cyclo has always helped me to achieve amazing results with a cars finish. I'd never heard of one until I saw my brother-in-law's red '92 Corvette. It looked incredible for it's age. As if it had literally just been driven off the showroom floor. I asked him what he used and bought the Cyclo and the Meguiars #7 polish and #26 wax less than a week later.

The Cyclo is a great tool but I switched to a Dewalt 849 rotary a while back for serious correction. Not only does Nissan have hard clear coats but so do Mercedes, Corvettes, Audis and VW's.

If you think Meguiars #7 is good, try #205-decent paint correction for a light polish and an amazing finish.
