quick HID fog question

i bought a 3000k h3 HID kit for my fogs, but today when i disassembled the fogs the bulb was too long??? its hitting the grey cover piece, i've seen a write-up somewhere that shows that, that can be cut off. my question is, if i cut that off is the light from the bulb going to be just a random spray of light, or is it still going to be focused?

Don't cut the shield. The light will glare all over the place. There's a special bulb size- H3C. Get that bulb size. www.hidextra.com sells that bulb size. Check the group deal section.

They don't sell it anymore? EBay does though.

OP, just lock it in there best you can. It shouldn't hurt too much. I know a few guys who've run em that way. I prefer H3C as Nismo said because it's easier, but I ran H3 for a little while without issue.

no, i didn't have to do any modification to make the bulb fit in place, your sure you have the bulb correctly installed...with the notch on the bulb lined up w the indentation on the bulb housing?

as you can see the hid bulb is longer and its hitting the shield. so back to my question can i cut off the shield without too much glare?

No you cannot cut the shield without causing a huge amount of glare. Just sell your HIDs and get some higher watt bulbs off eBay.

yea i wouldnt cut or eliminate that shield. perfect example...disconnect a headlight bulb from the headlight, hold it up, and turn ur lights on and try to look at it. it will be bright as hell, with no directional pattern at all w/o the reflector. that will make a cop on the opposing side make a u-turn and give u a ticket everytime.

the 95-96 and 97-99 fog lights are designed differently, maybe thats why mine fit

our fogs don't do anything. they hardly provide any light output, and what light they do provide is mostly just glare. just get some cheap yellow H3 bulbs and be done with it. removing the glare cap isn't a good idea.

oh. well yeah, i know what your talking about, with them hitting the reflector. luckily for me i didnt have any fitment issues.

i saw a FEW h3c hid bulbs on EBAY and they are 1. suspicious, 2. wacky Kelvin's

but try this link anyway if interested http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/3000K...Q5fAccessories

You serious? They dont have them listed on their website. You have to go through the group deal on here I think.

OP, it seems that the bulb dimensions vary by manufacturer. Depending on where you buy the bulbs from, they may or may not be able to fit.

thanks to goomz i found these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Nissa...Q5fAccessories

but my question for these is it simply plug-n-play? take out the stock bulb and insert this one, or do i still need a ballast since is a xenon hid bulb?

those are not legit hid bulbs. they are a regular gas bulb, but not actual hid bulbs. and wow they are 100 watts. thats almost double the power demand compared to factory which may = melting of fog wiring harness. but those are plug and play w your factory lighting system, no ballast required.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Xenon...Q5fAccessories

as you can see in the pic, you can see the obvious difference in the 2. the harness for the ballast, the covers that the bulbs are packaged in, and the description

i can see that working, acting as a spacer. but that sounds like a ***** to clip the bulb in place. i guess thats where the "little extra effort" comes in lol.

well a drain plug is $3 at pep boys so i can't imagine a crush washer (which you can even probably get at home depot) being much money

I didn't know that regular h3 bulbs can fit until this thread so I got some.

Honestly, they look unimpressive when looked head on. I've also moded the corner turning lights to stay on with the fogs.

head-on fogs only

Headlights only

Fogs only

lol yeah. i couldnt wait to install mine when they came in. just to caution you, i had to re adjust them down just a tad bit, theres a screw on the back of the fog lamp that allows you to do so. just be careful, the adjustment is VERY sensitive. and with that fog lamp re wire...driving during the snow storm in nj was actually very humbling due to the fact that i didnt have headlight reflection of the snow in my windshield lol. they are a good purchase imo
